Officials said the building appeared to lack working smoke detectors. News in Brief (Photo: file image) SPRING VALLEY - A basement fire left four apartments uninhabitable in a building that apparently lacked working smoke detectors , authorities said Tuesday. The fire was reported at 9:41 p.m. Tuesday in the laundry room at 60 Twin Ave., a 24-apartment building overseen by the Spring Valley Community Development Corp . "Heavy smoke was coming from the front door," Spring Valley Fire Chief Ken Sohlman said. "We contained the fire down in the laundry room. There was smoke damage to the four apartments in that section of the building." Sohlman said Orange & Rockland Utilities cut off power to the building in the wake of the fire. Cellphones Can Detect Certain Credit Card Skimmers « CBS Pittsburgh

Follow KDKA-TV : Facebook | Twitter PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Your cellphone could be the key to spotting a credit card skimmer at a gas pump or ATM. Frank Pollock spends his days inspecting gas pumps making sure you are not getting ripped off. In more recent times as the Chief Inspector for the Allegheny County Bureau of Weights and Measures he’s not just looking at gas quantities . “We look for skimmers every day when we look at gas pumps,” Pollock says. Skimmers have become the most dominant tool in the credit card thieves ’ tool bag. Some attach as overlays over the gas pump, ATM, or video rental box , intercepting your information as you swipe. Pollock says check for that type of skimmer by grabbing the slot with your fingers and “shake it a little bit make sure it’s straight. If it’s a little loose, if you have some suspicions, go and talk to the manager. “ Others require the thief to pop open the gas pump and install them inside. Pollock says, “it connects to the back of the credi

How can we solve Dallas' affordable housing crisis? (Points Summer Book Club, Day 5) | Commentary

Today, we wrap up our weeklong  Points Summer Book Club discussion of Matthew Desmond 's Evicted. The conversation is taking place on Facebook, in the Literary Dallas group . Joining the conversation is easy, but if you need instructions, this post should help. Here's today's topic of discussion: In Evicted , Matthew Desmond makes the case that the right to a decent home is part of what it means to be an American. And our eviction epidemic is challenging that: "Losing your home and possessions and often your job; being stamped with an eviction record and denied government housing assistance ; relocating to degrading housing in poor and dangerous neighborhoods; and suffering from increased material hardship , homelessness, depression, and illness — this is eviction's fallout," he writes on Page 298. He suggests solutions both small and big, from increased legal aid to outlawing discrimination against voucher holders to implementing a universal voucher prog

Lovely stay - Review of Sandpiper Holiday Apartments, Blackpool

Stayed for 3 days, 2 adults and 2 teenage boys, in apartment 6, the room was spotless, with a large bathroom with shower, large living room with push down bed, and another bedroom, we also had a play station which kept the lads happy, everything we needed was in the room (t.v, iron, hairdryer, microwave, coffee, teabags, sugar,) beds were very comfortable. We were a five minute walk to Blackpool Pleasureland, 10 minutes to the nearest pub/restaurant (velvet coaster) and trams stopped outside if you wanted to go tower etc. Charles was very welcoming on our arrival and we would happily stay here again. Woman Killed Love Rival and Stole Her Identity Online

A Nebraska woman convicted of killing a woman who was dating the same man — and then posing as the victim on social media to cover her tracks — was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday, PEOPLE confirms. On Tuesday, a Nebraska judge sentenced Shanna Golyar , 42, of Omaha, to life in prison without parole for the November 2012 murder of Cari Farver, 37. In a bizarre case that took years to unravel, authorities believe Golyar fatally stabbed Farver in November 2012 after she left the apartment of a man Golyar was dating at the same time, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. After the murder, Golyar assumed Farver ’s identity by using her phone to send fake emails and texts to the dead woman’s family and friends in an attempt to make it appear that her former love rival was still alive, court records show . Golyar also created a fake Facebook account posing as Farver and posted messages trying to convince the dead woman’s loved ones that she had left her life in Nebraska be

Behind-the-scenes of King Mill's renovation

Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017 AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A century’s worth of history sits on Augusta’s door step. Sibley and King Mill are some of the oldest pieces, but for years both sat empty. “We really hope that the mill district and Augusta Cyberworks becomes very much a destination,” said James Ainslie, CEO of Cape Augusta. Cape Augusta’s plans are giving those mills new life. A year’s worth of work already transformed a portion of Sibley Mill into new workspace for EDTS with opportunities for more restoration at the larger mill right next door. “We're looking at a mixed use residential, commercial, retail product here with 250 market rate apartments .” With 600,000 square feet of space, there's opportunity for even more than housing development. “This will essentially become a courtyard with retail and restaurants and coffee shops.” Renderings show a live, work, and play destination, rooted in Augusta’s history “It behooves us as developers, and ent
