Curious residents check out plans for $15M assisted-living facility in Machesney Park - News - Rockford Register Star

MACHESNEY PARK — The curious visited Village Hall today to learn more about the $15 million, three-story assisted-living facility that would be built on the former Machesney Park Mall property.

They reviewed floor plans and pictorials of the complex, which has changed a bit since originally presented in spring. The latest plans detail 90 apartments and eight duplex buildings for condos and greenspace for eight more to be built in a future phase of construction.

Renate Weber said she may one day seriously consider the development for her and her husband.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “I’m very surprised really. They seem to be thinking of everything. It gives peace of mind. I’ve seen assisted living like that but not in this area. It’s great.”

Construction on the $10 million first phase of 60 apartments and eight duplexes is slated to start in the fall. There will be studio apartments, one- and two-bedroom apartments, and the condos.

Around the same time, a pre-leasing office will open in the former J.C. Penney space, and people should be able to start moving in by fall of 2018, said Rod Gustafson, principal architect for the developer, PG Architecture Design/Build, and manager of TLC Illinois LLC, which will own the facility.

“We had a study done,” he said. “This is the last unserviced area in the whole greater Rockford community. We’ve seen a lot of interest from the community. It’s going to be wonderful. People are going to love it.”

The new assisted-living facility along Roosevelt Road, west of Second Street, is supposed to appeal to those 65 and older with “a contemporary, prairie-style structure” and lots of perks like walking paths, a full restaurant, rooms for exercise and crafts, a library area, hair salon, movie room and more.

Village officials said the proposed plans have sparked a lot of interest, which is why they scheduled the open house at the Village Hall.

“We thought it would be a good opportunity to ask questions, see elevations, see pictures or just answer questions,” said James Richter, the village’s community development director.

Mark Sorrentino, a former Machesney Park trustee, said he can picture living in one of the condos with his wife. He said the environment is safe, the condos seem affordable and “the location is perfect.”

“We’re so happy this is going to become part of Machesney Park,” he said. “They won’t have any trouble filling the units up. I’m sure of that.”
