8 Takeaways on Airbnb's Road to an IPO – Skift

Earlier this month, Skift published a comprehensive look at Airbnb’s Road to an IPO, or initial public offering on the stock market. While the story primarily focused on all of the many things the company is doing (and needs to do) as it pursues that inevitable IPO, it wasn’t necessarily a story about what it takes for a company like Airbnb to go public. Indeed, what Airbnb is doing right now in its efforts to become a “super brand of travel,” or a new breed of online travel agency (OTA), speaks to the very future of travel. Already, we’ve seen the company expand into tours and activities with the November launch of its Trips business, adding to its already robust 4-million-listing- strong Homes business . CEO Brian Chesky has also hinted the company may soon enter the flights sector as well. It’s a glimpse of what we as travelers can expect to see and to experience in the next few years as platforms like Airbnb continue to evolve and to attempt to solve the many pain points we st...

Some condos being run as serviced apartments, Business News

Image
AT least two projects nestled in a mature residential precinct in District 9 near Somerset are being run as serviced apartments - despite not having the regulatory approval to do so - and a third one is opening. Oxley Thanksgiving Residence , a freehold condominium at 328 River Valley Road owned by Chinese temple Poh Ern Shih , and St Thomas Lodge , which also sits on freehold land at 32 St Thomas Walk , are listed for short-term stay on the website of accommodation service provider Atas Residence . The Business Times' visit to these projects confirmed that they are being run as serviced apartments. A third property, Devonshire Apartments at 17 Devonshire Road , has just undergone a major renovation, and the units there are understood to be starting a new chapter as serviced apartments this month. BT's query to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) confirmed that these three properties are currently approved for residential use, but "do not have planning permission to...

Mosaic Sound Collective one step closer to East Austin campus

Tuesday night, the Planning Commission voted to approve recommendations for the rezoning of a property in East Austin that would allow for the expansion of a local music collective ’s campus, despite some commissioners’ wariness of how the upzoning might attract development less amenable to Austin’s endangered resident artists . Mosaic Sound Collective , a for-profit/nonprofit hybrid formed to help preserve Austin’s music culture in the midst of the city’s rapid growth, currently runs a modest operation of offices in what used to be a juvenile detention facility at 6400 FM 969. During the hearing, Commissioner Chito Vela jokingly said that he had heard the building was “haunted.” Cursed or not, if City Council approves the upzoning of the property from general office to commercial mixed use, Mosaic co-founder Chris “Curse” Mackey said he and other collective members have big dreams for turning the space into something “magical.” “(Our intention) is to create a legacy for the Aust...

Haunted Greenpoint: Ghost Hunting with the Brooklyn Paranormal Society

Image
Photography by Ian Hartsoe Are there noises in your apartment that go bump in the night? Perhaps a shadow darting out of the corner of your eye? A phantom touch? Or, perhaps it felt like someone, or something else, was with you…but West Street was oh-so-empty. Enter the Brooklyn Paranormal Society , a collective of spooky enthusiasts that seek out Brooklyn’s most haunted spots. I joined the group on August 9th to see what might be lurking in the dark in our neighborhood. Would I encounter other-worldly apparitions? Lost souls? Fragmented shapes and dark shadows? Or maybe a disembodied voice or two… It was certainly a frightful night with all things spooky. In a word, it was totally-me and I was ready to go ghost busting. I made my way to West Wine Bar ( 67 West Street ) to meet fellow ghost hunters and the mood was on point. After signing in, I collected a notebook for jotting down field notes, a tiny crystal for protection (or intention setting), and snagged myself a happy hour sangr...
