Fire chars apartment building in Browne’s Addition

A two- alarm apartment building fire in Browne’s Addition drew dozens of firefighters in the sweltering heat just before noon Friday. The first units to arrive at the Greentree Apartments at 1919 W. Pacific Ave. saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor of the building, said Spokane Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Mark John . A second alarm was immediately called to get more crews to battle the fire. Mike Varne lives in the basement level of the building and said someone was banging on doors to warn residents of the fire. “I was sitting,” he said. “Somebody knocked on my door and said there’s a fire, get the hell out,” Varne said. The flames were out within 20 minutes and crews cut several holes in the roof. Damage was limited to the third floor, John said. “There’s heavy charring,” he said. As firefighters worked there were several ambulances parked nearby , though no one was injured in the fire. John said they were there to assist any firefighters overcome b...

Melbourne auction clearance rate bounces back but 30 per cent of results unreported

Image
House-hunters are increasingly “wedging” Melbourne’s inner suburban real estate market by targeting a small number of quality homes while ignoring comparable properties , real estate agents say. The weekend auction market saw above- market prices paid for some well-located homes but comparable, if slightly inferior properties tended to underperform. The trend to highly divisive auction results for similar properties was demonstrated by two auctions in Fitzroy held an hour apart on Saturday. 80 Gore Street, Fitzroy, passed in at auction on the weekend. At one sale, four buyers fought hard for an unusually wide terrace house at 124 Victoria Street. Quoted by Nelson Alexander at $1.85 million to $2 million, the three- bedroom corner property , which has a renovated rear stables as a separate retreat, instantly attracted a $1.85 million offer from a buyers’ advocate representing a local family. The price rocketed to an on-the-market $2,040,000 and kept going until the house was s...

Welcome to Curbed Comparisons , a column that explores what one can rent or buy for a set dollar amount in various cities across the U.S. In our recurring exploration of what the real estate market looks like in various major U.S. cities, we’ve already looked at what kind of home you can get for $250,000, $500,000, and $1 million. Watertown Daily Times | As popularity and prices rise, developers build more tiny units

ARTICLE OPTIONS Throughout his early 60s, Brad Buchner and his wife, Elizabeth, lived in the kind of house that many near-retirees dream of: a peaceful, manageable ranch- style property tucked in a quiet Poconos town surrounded by trees, lakes, and plentiful open space . Costing anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000, tiny homes designed by Escape Homes enable anyone to travel around the country in a single-family home. As it turns out, however, that’s exactly what Buchner and his wife don’t want as they think about the next years of their lives. Three years ago, the Buchners packed their things and headed to Philadelphia, settling down in a Center City rental . As if ditching their longtime rural digs weren ’t enough, the pair also abandoned spaciousness, swapping their three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for precisely 345 total square feet . The transition has meant parting ways with a fully finished basement and a home office, and adjusting to an ovenless kitchenette and two miniature...

Spring Valley apartment building fire cause being investigated

Image
Officials said the building appeared to lack working smoke detectors. News in Brief (Photo: file image) SPRING VALLEY - A basement fire left four apartments uninhabitable in a building that apparently lacked working smoke detectors , authorities said Tuesday. The fire was reported at 9:41 p.m. Tuesday in the laundry room at 60 Twin Ave., a 24-apartment building overseen by the Spring Valley Community Development Corp . "Heavy smoke was coming from the front door," Spring Valley Fire Chief Ken Sohlman said. "We contained the fire down in the laundry room. There was smoke damage to the four apartments in that section of the building." Sohlman said Orange & Rockland Utilities cut off power to the building in the wake of the fire. He said building management will have a plumber repair some  gas line damage , but the fire was not related to natural gas. The fire's cause is being investigated by Spring Valley fire inspectors and detectives with the Rockland S...

Home has plenty of room for the kids AND an outdoorsy collection

SEATTLE — And now, A Western folk ode to some newish Western folks : OH, GIVE ME A HOME … The first space Steven Rinella and Katie Finch shared didn ’t have much space at all: an 800-square-foot apartment in Brooklyn, outfitted with “hand-me-down furniture, from stoop sales,” Finch says. Her job with Amazon blazed their trail West, where they initially rented a Tudor in Madison Park before discovering a new, unmistakably modern option in Magnolia. “We had never thought about a modern home,” Finch says. Once they did, Rinella says, “I was opposed to it.” The vista is spectacular, though, and with three levels, 3,400 square feet and four bedrooms, there’s plenty of wide-open territory for a family (they have three kids, ages 2, 4 and 7). They staked their claim, then mapped out a plan to balance the modern aesthetic with “warm and cozy” furnishings, materials and finishes. Step One: They hired interior designer Joy Rondello of J+Studio, whom they met through the national, customized ...

Living Next Door to a White Supremacist

Until Saturday, August 12th, Debra Godfrey liked to sit on her front porch in the afternoons. She’d smoke a Newport and watch what little traffic there was pass by. Godfrey, who is fifty-one, lives in Belmont, a quiet neighborhood on the southeast side of Charlottesville, Virginia. Kids would play together after they got off the school bus a couple of houses down. Neighbors would walk past with their dogs, waving hello, as they headed to a nearby park. These days, Godfrey mostly stays inside in the afternoons. The neighborhood is still quiet, she said. “But it’s more quiet. People are more alert.” August 12th was the day of an alt-right rally called “Unite the Right,” which devolved into violence as thousands of white supremacists and counter-protesters swarmed through the city’s downtown streets. The unrest made international headlines and left a thirty-two-year-old counter- protester named Heather Heyer dead , with dozens more injured. For Godfrey, who is black, the day’s chaos has...
