INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indianapolis Fire Department crews had a busy Thursday morning fighting two fires, one at an East Washington Street apartment and the other at a Bates Street residence , according to Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith . Reith said IFD crews were dispatched just before 2 a.m. and arrived to 5824 E. Washington Street to light smoke showing on the third floor, from a vacant apartment #26. Reith said 16 IFD units were dispatched, getting the flames was under control at 2:01 a.m. According to a release, there were no injuries, however damage is estimated at $16,000. A cause is being investigated by IFD and Indianapolis Metro Police Fire Investigations . 14 IFD units were later dispatched to a single- story house fire at 1510 Bates Street , at 7:01 a.m. and was under control just after 7:30 a.m., Reith reports. WASHINGTON, DC — A man has been arrested for murdering his 81-year-old mother in her Northeast Washington apartment Saturday , police said. At about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the 5200 block of 4th Street, NE., for the report of a domestic violence assault . Responding officers located an adult female — later identified as Anne Alredia Cook of Northeast — suffering from multiple sharp and blunt force injuries , police said. Cook was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The victim's son — Derek Norman Cook, 51, of Northeast DC — was arrested and charged Sunday with first degree murder while armed, police said. Developer Carl Dranoff is planning 28 stories of luxury condos at Broad and Pine Streets, instead of the hotel-and-apartment hybrid he previously had in mind for the site, as Center City heads toward a likely near-term glut of both rental housing and hotel guest rooms . The developer’s earlier vision of a 22-story building with 76 hotel rooms and 83 apartments known as the Hyde — to have been developed with the Los Angeles hospitality mogul Sam Nazarian ’s SBE Entertainment Group — has been supplanted by a new proposal with 56 “high-end” condos, Dranoff said in an email Tuesday. A new event is set to debut at the New Baltimore Farmers Market ’s upcoming corn roast . The market will most a pet adoption event in conjunction with its fourth annual Corn Roast & Summer Fun Day this weekend. The event is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the market, located next to the New Baltimore Recreation Center building on Washington Street downtown . Local animal rescues set to participate in the pet adoption event include Luvum All Animal Rescue in Marine City, Detroit Animal Welfare Group in Romeo and A Rejoyceful Animal Rescue , based in Mount Clemens. Homemade pet supplies will also be featured at the event from Lucy Lou Doggie Boutie and Doggie Denim. When he was homeless for 13 years along the Springwater Corridor Trail , Jeff Nelson used methamphetamine daily. Another man, who calls himself Gadget and lives on the streets of inner Southeast Portland, says he uses it once a day. Why meth? Until Saturday, August 12th, Debra Godfrey liked to sit on her front porch in the afternoons. She’d smoke a Newport and watch what little traffic there was pass by. Godfrey, who is fifty-one, lives in Belmont, a quiet neighborhood on the southeast side of Charlottesville, Virginia. Kids would play together after they got off the school bus a couple of houses down. Neighbors would walk past with their dogs, waving hello, as they headed to a nearby park. These days, Godfrey mostly stays inside in the afternoons. The neighborhood is still quiet, she said. “But it’s more quiet. BMC Investments plans to turn two buildings along St. Paul Street and another on Josephine Street into two apartment buildings up to seven or eight floors tall and a cheaper hotel for travelers who don’t want to shell out top dollar.
