Forty houses and flats for rent are to be built at Banklands by Robertson Homes and Kingdom Housing Association . There were around 50 objections from the public to the development, voicing worries about road safety, flooding and the suitability for housing of the 1. 2 hectare steeply sloping site , which is outside the town’s settlement boundary. However, Fife Council’s north east planning committee gave consent , subject to conditions and a legal agreement on roadway improvements and an extra £10,000 for play park facilities . The estate will include 22 one and two-bedroom flats, 12 two-bedroom houses and six three-bedroom houses. It is one of two schemes proposed for Newburgh, with plans for mixed use development on a large plot of land north and south of Cupar Road at an early stage. Those behind the Banklands scheme overcame reservations of transportation officers by agreeing to i

GRBJ: Signals point to surge in apartment construction

616 Lofts at 820 Monroe Ave. NW in Grand Rapids. (Photo: Facebook.com/616Lofts) GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Despite a relative lull in multifamily residential housing construction at the beginning of 2017, indications point to another surge. Currently in the city of Grand Rapids, there are 19 projects under construction and more than 2,000 apartment units, most of which fall into the market-rate category. Meanwhile, there are 15 proposed or approved projects in the city with nearly 15,000 units, many of which qualify as affordable housing developments . Several projects seemed to stall earlier this year, and at least one project, the Warner Building, switched from a residential component to hotel prior to its groundbreaking in June. A major signal residential might still have forward momentum is the groundbreaking of 601 Bond by the New York- based development group Time Equities Inc. The 16-story, 140-unit mixed-use building in the North Monroe neighborhood had gone dark for months be

Google Fiber wins Louisville, Kentucky, OTMR battle as court dismisses AT&T’s lawsuit

Google Fiber won a major coup in its battle to simplify the pole attachment process via the One Touch Make Ready (OTMR) ordinance in Louisville, Kentucky, as a district court dismissed AT&T’s suit against the metro government. Louisville’s OTMR ordinance, which was passed in February 2016, would help ease Google Fiber ’s and other competitors’ movement into the Louisville broadband market by allowing them to move and install their own wiring on poles instead of waiting for AT&T and other service providers to conduct this work. This process, which is known as make-ready, requires new entrants like Google Fiber to wait months for existing providers like AT&T and Comcast to move their lines themselves. Chicago bank branches emptying, but what will replace them? - In Other News

As you do more banking by smartphone, that bank branch you used to visit may soon turn into a restaurant, a day care center or even a condo tower. After a branch building boom a decade or so ago, banks are closing offices by the thousands as more of their customers bank online . They're leaving behind space ready to be transformed into something else, whether an urban storefront or a free- standing brick building with a drive-thru in the suburbs. "If the real estate is strong, any number of things can happen to the property," says Kim McGuire, senior vice president in the Chicago office of CBRE. It's a problem or an opportunity, depending on your perspective, that will be here for a while. Banks operate about 89,300 branches in the United States today , down 8 percent over the past decade, according to Chicago- based real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle . JLL expects an additional 20 percent drop over the next decade. In the Chicago area, the number of branches d

Forget coffee and avocado toast — most people blow nearly 40% of their money in the same place

caption Giving up coffee isn’t the key to retiring early. source Tristan Fewings / Getty There’s one area where almost everyone in the US overspends, and – spoiler alert – it isn’t coffee. It’s not avocado toast either, for that matter. The biggest chunk of the average American’s budget goes toward housing, which accounts for about 37% of take-home pay. Many people spend even more. In some circumstances, spending a lot on rent or a mortgage is unavoidable. But in many cases, making a few sacrifices on housing expenses today could lead to significant savings – and a far more comfortable future. Take, for example, Grant Sabatier, a 30-something self-made millionaire who founded the finance blog Millennial Money . He was able to save about $25,000 in two years by cutting back on housing, as well as transportation and dining expenses. “At the end of the day it comes down to a personal choice, but I was happy moving to a smaller apartment, moving closer to my office, and eating out le

No tax credits for Sevier low-income housing projects | News

NASHVILLE – Officially known as the Low- Income Housing Tax Credit Program administered by the Tennessee Housing Development Agency , an initiative that could have brought up to three housing developments to Sevier County resulted in none of the three proposals being selected for awards of tax credits. Had any of the three proposals been approved, the development would have represented the first time since 2012 that a multifamily housing development in Sevier County received state allocations in the form of tax credits from the agency. Proposals for tax credits were made in February by private developers across Tennessee for either the construction of new units or the rehabilitation of existing units. On Tuesday, THDA released the results of its ranking system for projects proposed across the state. Michael Blade, THDA's director and assistant legal counsel for multifamily development , verified that none of the three projects proposed for Sevier County made the cut. "N
