Woman struck and killed while walking on Route 130

DELRAN -- A woman walking on Route 130 near her home at Hunters Glen Apartments was struck and killed Friday evening, according to police.

Delran police identified her as Melanie Girandola, 52.

She was struck on the southbound side of Route 130 at 6:31 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said they were called to the area of the Sunoco gas station for the crash. The gas station is right next to the entrance to her apartment complex off of North Millside Drive. There is also a crosswalk across Route 130 at that corner.

Police did not say whether she was attempting to cross the busy highway when she was hit. In front of the Sunoco there is no crosswalk and concrete jersey barriers stand between the north and southbound lanes.

No charges have been filed against the driver, Jorge Coelho, of Delran, according to police.

The southbound side of the highway was closed until 10:30 p.m. while police investigated the crash. It remains under investigation, police said.
