A novel way of cooling the housing market - AFRICA

Image
A housing project in Qingdao, Shandong province. [Photo/VCG] President Xi Jinping has said "houses are built to be lived in, not for speculation". In this context, the pilot for joint property rights housing implemented by Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban Rural Development is an important move to cool down the heated housing market in the capital. According to a document, the government and the homebuyers will jointly own the policy- based housing units , with the government granting the buyers the right to use the property. Since the Beijing municipal government will provide policy support for the construction of joint property rights housing , the price of such housing units will be lower than commercial property in the same neighborhood. However, the homebuyers' right to use the property will be partly restricted. Different from economically affordable housing , joint property rights housing is a kind of limited property rights housing , becau...

ORANGE — As Chapman University helps students move in this week, it will be housing 37 percent of its undergraduates on campus, while many more will spread out into rented rooms and houses in nearby Old Towne Orange neighborhoods . Within four years, the university expects to have 48 percent of its students living in dorms, one project away from meeting Chapman President Daniele Struppa ’s commitment to the community to get half of its students into campus-controlled housing and out of neighborhoods. For years, college life and neighborhood serenity haven ’t always mixed. The volume of residents’ complaints growing until Chapman paused expansion plans in 2015 to first address the friction. He assured residents that getting more students into campus-run housing would be one of his first priorities. Chapman University bought property adjacent to its Pather...

Woodcrest Apartment Prices Set By Developer, Says Clark Senior Housing Pres

This letter to the editor was received from Clark Senior Housing President Bill Caruso .  We, the Clark Senior Housing Corp ., would like to let all the residents, especially the new residents in town, know that the Clark Senior Housing Corp is a private, non-profit company, not associated with any township's governmental agency. The Senior Housing Corp . was organized to encourage the town to plan and build affordable housing . In December 2000, we came before the Mayor and council to ask them for help for this noble project. We were told that the town had no money to spend on senior housing or any land left to build it on. We were also told to find the money and land ourselves and then they will see what they can do to help us out. The plan was always to help our seniors on fixed incomes that could no longer afford the high taxes on their homes, to find affordable housing in town so they can stay dose to their loved ones. We never would support building luxury adult apartments...

How Churches and Service Clubs Can Ease Housing Crunch

Image
“It’s kind of in my bloodline,” said Jack Barr. Contests, events & more from Tyee and select partners His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all Freemasons. Barr followed in their footsteps, and is the president of the Vancouver Masonic Centre Association today . As political scientist Robert Putnam noted in his famous work Bowling Alone , community groups like the Freemasons have been declining for the last few decades. Religious groups like the Roman Catholic Knights of Columbus, military groups like Legions, service clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis, even youth scouting groups and bowling leagues have seen participation plummet. Some longtime churches have also seen congregations shrink dramatically . Barr says freemasonry’s most recent heyday was the late-1960s and early-1970s. But the organizations are still around, and many own property. A number of groups are facing the question of what to do with their land and buildings as needs change, along with their abili...
