Study: Arsenic poisoning a risk for 50M in Pakistan

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina high school student charged after filming a deputy tossing another student across a classroom is suing the school district and the sheriff’s department. Attorneys for Niya Kenny filed the lawsuit Tuesday accusing the Richland County Sheriff ’s Department and the Richland Two School District of false arrest, defamation and negligent supervision. Kenny was charged with disturbing schools after she tried to intervene in the October 2015 incident. The student tossed from her chair by Deputy Ben Fields also was charged with disturbing schools. Charges against both were dropped, and Fields was fired. State and federal prosecutors have declined to prosecute Fields. Kenny’s lawsuit says she was arrested after she “protested the assault” of the other student and was wrongly expelled. Share this: Related Posts Advertisement

August Wilson’s Pittsburgh - The New York Times

Image
Eventually the Civic Arena, which many came to see as a harbinger of the community’s destruction, was torn down and replaced with the modern PPG Paints Arena . Half a block away, the Freedom Corner was dedicated in 2001, commemorating the civil rights leaders of the 1950s and 1960s who sought to maintain the Hill District. It is also a symbolic gateway to the neighborhood. In 2006, a proposal to build a casino in the lower Hill District was overwhelmingly rejected by residents. To this day, the sphere of influence from downtown generally stops at Crawford Street, which for me was a jarring reminder of how ghosts from the past don’t easily dissipate. Though much of Wilson’s Pittsburgh is gone, you could use his words to tour the district. I did so, led by Kimberly C. Ellis, a digital consultant and founder of the preservation- minded Historic Hill Institute , who is also the playwright’s niece. “The neighborhood has changed a lot,” she said, adding that “there is a renewed level of p...

Apartment complex proposed for ‘downtown’ Lynbrook | Herald Community Newspapers

By Mike Smollins Village of Lynbrook officials are mulling a proposal by development company Mill Creek Residential to build a luxury apartment complex on Rocklyn Avenue, near Merrick Road. Hot Skates, Fun Station USA and Hi Tech Security now occupy the three-acre site. “Today’s apartment residents are craving a downtown living experience along with convenient access to a mix of urban and suburban lifestyle experiences ,” Russell Tepper, a senior managing director at MCR, wrote in an email to the Herald. “Lynbrook’s new residential community would serve all types of residents … so that they may take advantage of the luxuries of suburban living , without sacrificing the trappings of an urban, modern lifestyle.” MCR acquires and operates high- end rental communities across the country, and has built complexes in West Hempstead, Mineola, Yonkers, Westchester County and New Jersey. Tepper said that the company would create a transit- oriented residential community — a walkable nei...

The San Jose Flood: What Went Wrong and How the City Plans to Fix It

Image
A new report could give insight into why San Jose failed to notify more than 14,000 residents that their neighborhoods were under a flood threat in February. The report, commissioned by San Jose and conducted by emergency management consultant Witt O’Brien’s, gave the city an “A” for how it responded after the Feb. 21 flood but an “F” for foresight. It was also critical of the way the city handled notifying residents , such as Juanita Wilson, who was living in the Rock Springs neighborhood when the flood occurred. That area is near Coyote Creek, which floods whenever Anderson Dam overflows . South of San Jose, the dam was built in 1950. “We had no warning from the city, none from the county, nothing at all,” Wilson said. A night photo of the pole Jeffrey Hare uses to measure Coyote Creek water levels . This photo was taken on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, two days before the neighborhood was flooded.
