Two-alarm Norfolk apartment fire displaces 17

NORFOLK, Va. – Seventeen people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in the 7100 block of Sewells Point Road Friday . The fire was reported at 11:12 a.m. and crews with the Norfolk Fire- Rescue arrived approximately four minutes later. An adult female occupant inside the apartment smelled smoke and self-evacuated along with her five-year-old grandson. She notified neighbors of the fire as she evacuated. Engine Company- 14 reported heavy smoke visible from the second floor of the two- story apartment building . Crews advanced a fire hose inside the building for an interior fire attack and to conduct a primary search of the apartment. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions as they attempted to suppress the fire. A second alarm was called due to the magnitude of the fire and the size of the building. Firefighters battle east Charlotte apartment fire

Charlotte firefighters say no one was injured in an apartment fire that was ignited about 6:45 a.m. Thursday off Farm Pond Lane in north Charlotte . It happened at the Summit Ridge Apartments at 5900 block of Farm Pond Lane . The Observer’s news partner WBTV said at least 12 units were evacuated. The cause of the fire was still being investigated, and it was unclear Thursday how many people were without homes. Firefighters reported seeing smoke and fire on arrival, but they quickly controlled the blaze. A damage estimate was not available early.

OP firefighters battle apartment fire near 119th, Switzer

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park firefighters battled a two- alarm apartment fire near 119th Street and Switzer Road. Firefighters were called to the Highland Ridge Apartments in the 11800 block of Perry Street just before 11 a.m. Friday. Advertisement Smoke and fire were showing when fire crews arrived at the scene. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. No injuries were reported. Firefighters rescued one dog, but another dog was found dead in the building. Eight units in the building were damaged. The Red Cross is helping those displaced. Fire investigators said the fire started in a first- floor apartment , but the cause has not yet been determined.

Firefighters leave apartment fire after reports of possibly armed suspect

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) - Firefighters were forced to leave an apartment fire Friday afternoon after being informed of a possibly armed man in the unit. At 4 p.m., the Clark County Fire Department received 911 calls reporting a balcony on fire at the Copper Creek Apartments located at 9490 S. Bermuda Road, near Richmar Avenue.  Upon arrival fire crews found smoke coming from the balcony of a second floor apartment .  Firefighters quickly made access through the locked apartment door and were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire when they were informed that a man was barricaded in the apartment and possibly armed with a weapon. Firefighters retreated from the area leaving all their equipment behind and began evacuating bystanders to a safe location out of the line of sight of the apartment. The fire started around 6:44 a.m. Thursday, March 9, at Summit Ridge Apartments on Farm Pond Lane near Albemarle Road. Smoke and flames were showing.  Crews on scene tell FOX 46 Charlotte 12 units were evacuated. Burning SUV caused 3-alarm fire in apartments in far North Dallas

DALLAS- A burning SUV caused a three- story apartment building to catch flames in far North Dallas. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call at the McCallum Meadows Apartments finding a burning SUV under a section of covered parking. Flames were able to make it to the attic of the three- story apartment building by way of a tree located in front of it. Firefighters were able to to extinguish the three-alarm fire by deploying hand-lines, limiting most of the damage to the building. With a total of 24 units in the building, one sustained a majority of the damage with a handful of others having various degrees of smoke and water damage. There were no reported resident injuries , but two firefighters are being evaluated for heat exhaustion. Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental in nature.

Heavy rain causes record-breaking flooding in Kansas City area

FAIRWAY, Kan. —   Strong thunderstorms moved through the Kansas City area Monday night and into Tuesday morning, creating record-breaking flooding and forcing emergency crews to conduct hundreds of water rescues. The National Weather Service said as much as 9 inches of rain fell in one neighborhood, while a large swath around the city saw between 4 and 6 inches of rain. Several water rescues have been conducted by the Kansas City Fire Department , Kansas City Police Department , Riverside Fire Department and Overland Park Fire Department . The KCFD and KCPD say they have received more than 130 calls for water rescues. Overland Park Fire Department said it also responded to at least 16 water rescue calls . The OPFD is working to rescue a family of seven trapped on the roof of a home. Officials say the family consists of four children, three adults and their pets. Man dies after fire at Manhattan Apartments

A 61-year-old man died after a fire was reported at the Manhattan Apartments on Saturday morning , authorities said. An alarm sounded in one of the apartments at about 7:50 a.m. Saturday, according to information from the Oak Ridge Fire Department that was provided by City of Oak Ridge spokesperson Sarah Self. Oak Ridge Police Department officers found heavy smoke inside the apartment when they arrived Saturday morning , and the Oak Ridge Fire Department was dispatched. Nearby residents were evacuated while  firefighters made entry to the apartment and extinguished the fire. A man was found inside, the city said. “Crews removed the victim and immediately began life -saving measures,” the ORFD said. “The victim was then transported by Anderson County EMS to Methodist Medical Center , where he was pronounced dead.” The man has been identified as Michael McAlister, age 61, of Oak Ridge. Blaze destroys apartment on Tucson's northwest side; no injuries | Local news

A fire destroyed an apartment on Tucson's northwest side Monday . No one was injured in the Aug. 14 blaze, said Capt. Brian Keeley of Northwest Fire District . Shortly before 2:30 p.m., a 911 caller reported a fire in their apartment at Enclave at the Foothills at 7300 N. Mona Lisa Road , Keeley said. The neighborhood is north of West Ina Road near North La Cholla Boulevard . Two residents at the apartment left after reporting the fire. Firefighters put out the fire and prevented it from spreading to other apartments. The apartment above the burning apartment suffered minor smoke damage , Keeley said. Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire. A damage estimate is unknown at this time, Keeley said. The Northwest Fire Community Assistance team is working with the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross to aid any residents who are displaced, said Keeley.

Cause of Penniman Park apartment fire under investigation

A top- floor apartment fire Monday afternoon in Elkridge ended after 65 firefighters and paramedics from Howard, Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes. First responders were called to the 6200 block of Greenfield Road around noon, Howard fire officials said, where they found flames engulfing a fourth-floor balcony at the Penniman Park apartments . The fire extended from the apartment's exterior into its interior and roof, but was under control by 12:15 p.m. Other apartments were affected by residual smoke; however, fire officials said residents evacuated the building before they arrived. No resident or firefighter injuries were reported. Fire officials said the sprinkler head between the balcony and apartment's living area was activated and limited the damage. Howard County fire department 's Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the origin and cause of Monday's fire.

Firefighter, 2 others hurt in Northeast Philadelphia apartment blaze | Pennsylvania news

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A fast-moving blaze at a Philadelphia apartment complex overnight has left a firefighter and two residents injured. Fire Capt. William Dixon says the firefighter is in stable condition, but had no additional information on the injuries. The two residents were taken to a hospital and one was listed in critical condition. The other person's condition wasn't available. The fire was reported just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in northeast Philadelphia . Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out of a second-floor window of the three-story complex. It was brought under control about 45 minutes later. About 50 residents were evacuated. 5-alarm fire breaks out at Riverside apartment building

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- Crews battled a five-alarm fire at an abandoned apartment building in Riverside on Sunday. The fire broke out in a second- story apartment at the Monte Vista Terrace apartments , located in the 2400 block of Market Street around 4:30 p.m., fire officials said. The unoccupied building is listed as a senior living facility . When firefighters first arrived, they say they attempted to fight the flames from the inside, but were quickly forced to evacuate as the fire grew. The fire was upgraded from a four-alarm fire to a five alarm fire in the 9 p.m. hour. By 11 p.m., crews had the flames under control. They were expected to remain on scene through the night.
