Court to appoint attorney for murder suspect | Local News
A court-appointed attorney will be assigned to the case of an East Bay man suspected of shooting and killing a 24-year-old in a Belmont apartment earlier this month after he admitted he would not be able to afford a retained lawyer Wednesday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Jovhon Alexander Stewart, 27, did not enter a plea in his second court appearance since his arrest last week, which ended a four-day manhunt spanning two Bay Area counties, according to prosecutors.
Early in the morning on Saturday, Aug. 5, DeJohn Jones, a 24-year-old Union City resident, was shot four times at his ex-girlfriend’s 1-bedroom apartment at 566 Ralston Ave., according to prosecutors.
According to police and prosecutors, Jones and the woman had recently broken up when he showed up possibly unexpected. Jones, his sister and his cousin went to the woman’s apartment to retrieve his TV and some personal items. When he arrived the woman was there with her brother and five of his friends, including Stewart.
It’s not yet clear what prompted the shooting, but police have reason to believe those in the apartment had been drinking before the dispute escalated and became deadly. Stewart, who is considered transient and often stays at friends’ houses, was arrested Aug. 9 without incident with the assistance of officers from Union City and BART police departments.
Stewart remains in custody on no bail status. He will next appear in court Aug. 21 for appearance of the designated attorney from the county’s private defender program and entry of plea, according to prosecutors.
