Permit challenge to East Village Park project 'Quartyard II' - KUSI News

EAST VILLAGE (KUSI) — City planning officials gave final approval Wednesday to the building of Quartyard II, an innovative urban park in East Village. The project, first conceived by a group of students at the New School of Architecture and Design, was built with old shipping containers at Park and Market but closed in June when the property was turned over for re-development. Last month, the agency that handles development matters granted a conditional use permit to a new site at the corner of 13th and Market. The proposal included tables , games, food and beverages, an off- leash dog area and a stage for live entertainment. Lt. Colonel (Ret.) David Gapp, who lives in the area decided to appeal the permit, saying the live music was not appropriate for the neighborhood.  Gapp said while there were no residential buildings adjacent to the old Quartyard location, he said 2,000 people live in seven nearby buildings in the area around the new site. Gapp says many of those residents are

In the Gig Economy, Coworking Spaces Are Everywhere—What Is It Like to Work in One? - Features

Image
The Riveter: This one was my favorite. Steve Korn S eattle has the fourth-fastest- growing freelance economy in the country, which explains why there are almost as many coworking spaces opening up as luxury apartment buildings . Since I'll never be able to afford a luxury apartment , I thought maybe I can at least work at a place where the sink actually drains and the coffee is always fresh. So I checked out some coworking spaces and brought my laptop with me. I didn't tell them I was coming. I wanted to see what these places were like inside, without any PR hoopla. Clearly, we are living in the age of the remote worker. By 2020, 40 percent of the US workforce will be freelancers, temps, independent contractors, or "solopreneurs," according to a 2010 study by Intuit. According to the 2017 Global Coworking Survey , nearly 1. 2 million people worldwide will have tried coworking by the end of next year, and around 14, 000 coworking spaces will be in operation. Sixt

(Redfin) When you want to own a house near a Metro station and have a tight budget, a condo can be a good solution as long as you are careful to include the condo fee in your housing payment calculation . While even condos in the District can be pricey, crossing the Potomac into Arlington can sometimes get you more for your money, but you’ll have to shop carefully. The median sales price in Arlington County was $625,000 in June, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors. Yet some condos are available to buyers looking for affordability. For example, the condo at River Place at 1121 Arlington Blvd., Unit #631, is priced at $195,000. The monthly condo fee is $450 per month, and annual taxes are $2,123 for the one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit, which has 716 square feet. The condo fee includes all utilities. Real estate investing in older adults: What’s best?

NEW YORK – Aug. 22, 2017 – With all the talk about aging baby boomers and life- extending health care advances , it might be a bit bewildering deciding which seniors housing assets are best primed for success. Lee Everett, managing consultant at research firm CoStar Portfolio Strategy , might be able to provide some clarity. Two product types – active adult communities and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs – will be the winners in the seniors housing race both in the short and the long term, Everett says. Everett and his CoStar colleagues are bullish about active adult communities , which are age-restricted developments that offer an independent lifestyle and relatively maintenance-free housing. Growth in this segment is "just around the corner," with more baby boomers getting older and seeking alternatives to traditional homes and apartments. "We're looking at a period where there's going to be a lot of fast and explosive growth in active a

After 50 years as a New Yorker, beauty-product maven June Jacobs is embracing the old and the new in the city

June Jacobs has been in the beauty and wellness business for over 30 years, and a New Yorker for more than 50. Jacobs is the creator of the June Jacobs Spa Collection , offered to guests in Grand Hyatt hotels and also found at spas, resorts, and in stores.  We caught up with June to talk about her Upper East Side neighborhood , her love of wraparound terraces , and why she craves a little bit of the old New York City and a little bit of the new. Is this your dream neighborhood, or is there someplace else in NYC you’d prefer to settle? I wouldn't say that it is my dream neighborhood, but it is by far the best neighborhood for me to live in. It’s very accessible to all of the parts of the city that I want to be near, and I don’t picture myself moving elsewhere. Do you own or rent? Rent. How’d you find it? One of my close friends was renting the apartment I live in now and I was always envious of it. She got engaged and was going to move in with her fiancé, so I knew it was going for

Claudia Angulo and her four children live in Orange Cove, California, a corner of Fresno County known for its citrus. She says when planes fly over the orange grove next to their apartment building and spray pesticides on the trees, she and her family experience headaches , exhaustion and difficulty breathing. But Angulo is concerned about an even more serious health problem in her 11-year-old son Isaac. When she was pregnant with him, she worked at a packing house, handling freshly picked citrus . After Isaac was born, Angulo says she noticed his development seemed slow and strange. “I saw that he didn’t play the same as other kids,” she says. “He didn’t learn the same.” She says his behavior was aggressive and antisocial. And she tells a story about the time he even threatened suicide — when he was only four years old. When he was five, a doctor diagnosed with him ADHD. Angulo says several other pregnant women she worked with at the packing house also had children who developed behav

David Engberg wheels through the third apartment he’s had in two years. PHOTO BY KARLOS RENE AYALA David Engberg and James Clark cling to their independence by a thread. Both men were born with cerebral palsy and live off Supplemental Security Income , or SSI—a stipend that puts them under the federal poverty line . So far, they’ve managed to keep a roof over their heads by splitting the cost of rent. But since the affordable housing crisis hit , the roommates have been priced out of two apartments in just two years. The stressful shuffling was witnessed by Jennifer Schmidt, their case manager at InAlliance, a nonprofit that provides employment and living services for people with disabilities. Advocates such as Schmidt are becoming increasingly alarmed by the way skyrocketing rents are affecting Sacramento County ’s 14, 000 disabled residents . Several independent surveys suggest Sacramento is experiencing some of the largest rent increases in the nation. Few feel those tectonic ma
