Park Ridge condo residents get first look at fire damage

On Saturday morning residents of a Park Ridge condominium complex were allowed to return to collect belongings after a fire Friday night displaced about 50 people. 

No one was injured and the cause of the fire that started about 9 p.m. on North Maple Avenue remained under investigation, Park Ridge Fire Chief Thomas Derienzo said.

On Saturday, a blue tarp covered the collapsed roof of the building where the fire started. There are 25 apartments in the building and some surrounding the fire had smoke and water damage. Windows were also boarded up with wood on the first and second floors.

Police were called in today to block of entrances to stop the public from coming to look at the fire damage, which is on private property. A police officer had traffic cones and a road block about 500 feet away from the building and was allowing only residents in. 

A River Vale florist was also allowed in after showing the officer where he was making a delivery. 

Earlier today resident Alex Gerbig returned with other residents to collect belongings. Gerbig said that about 8:30 p.m. on Friday night the fire department knocked on his door and started to evacuate people.

By 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the area was quiet, with only a blue tarp covering the roof, yellow police caution tape and a faint smell of smoke with the breeze left behind.
