MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Fire investigators have arrested and charged 19-year-old Edward Brookins in Tuesday's arson at Oak Ridge Apartments off Moffett Road.

According to investigators Brookins turned himself in to Mobile Police Wednesday. Investigators say during questioning Brookins confessed to setting the fire and signed a written statement before being taken to Metro Jail.

"He basically just said that he was bored and set it on fire. There was an Auburn wreath outside the door and he lit it with a lighter. He had no idea who lived in the apartment. He wasn't upset with anybody - he was just bored and lit the fire," said Terry Sexton, Mobile Fire Marshal's Office, Arson division. "The crazy part is he actually assisted the homeowner when he came in trying to put the fire out. When the homeowner found out who was accused of setting the fire - he was shocked. Just shocked."

Sexton said Brookins was visiting his sister at the complex when he started the fire. It was reported around 1:34 p.m. When the suspect was approached for questioning he ran from investigators and a foot pursuit ensued

"He ran into some woods behind the apartment complex that are secluded and swampy. We later reviewed surveillance footage from the complex and saw him set the fire. Witnesses there were able to identify him as Brookins," said Sexton.

Witnesses believe the suspect was picked up b a vehicle later. Sexton says the people in the vehicle will not face charges because they had no idea what had happened.

There was minimal damage to the apartment.

Brookins is charged with Arson 1st, Resisting Arrest, and Failure to Obey an Officer.
