Affordable housing summit coming to NPR | News

NEW PORT RICHEY – A shortage of affordable housing is an issue that affects communities throughout the state and Pasco County is no stranger to the subject.

Guests to next week’s Housing and Community Development Summit in New Port Richey will learn how Pasco is affected and new ideas in development to make sure low-income residents can find proper shelter.

The summit will take place from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the CARES Elfers Center, 4136 Barker Drive. It is presented by the Pasco County Community Development Department.

Jaimie Ross, president and CEO of the Tallahassee-based Florida Housing Coalition, will lead the discussion.

“It’s really a time for different parts of the community to come together and talk about the issues they’re having and come up with some ideas for addressing them,” Ross said of the Aug. 21 gathering. Other localities throughout the state request similar summits with Florida Housing Coalition involvement and the nonprofit organization will stage its 2017 statewide Affordable Housing Conference, to be held Sept. 10-13 in Orlando.

Local experts will join Ross and take part in panel discussions that will touch on topics such as homeownership, homelessness, rental housing and neighborhood redevelopment.

Ross said the local summits provide valuable information about what issues and deficiencies affect individual towns, counties and regions. Some areas may experience greater demands for affordable rentals while others need more homeownership programs and initiatives.

“It is a really good time for people to hear from one another about what the housing issues are and for creative ideas to come out,” Ross said.

A focal point of Ross’s discussions at local summits and the statewide conference is the William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing Act of 1992. The state legislation turned 25 this year, and Ross played an integral role in its development and enactment.

The Sadowski Act sets aside revenue from a tax on real estate transactions to help ensure funding for state and local housing programs. It is named for William “Bill” Sadowski, a former state representative who at the time of his death in a 1992 plane crash near St. Augustine was secretary of what was then the Florida Department of Community Affairs.

During the housing summit, Ross will speak to the importance of convincing legislators to appropriate all the housing trust fund money specifically for addressing affordable housing concerns.

According to AffordableHousingOnline.com, Pasco County is home to 40 low-income-housing apartment complexes. New Port Richey and Port Richey are each home to seven of those complexes, while six are in Hudson and one is in Holiday.
