This incoming class of students at UConn's main campus is slightly smaller than last year's — 3,650 compared to 3,800 — but contains a record number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians and a higher percentage of students in the top 10 percent of their class. Benson Gathany moved into his first dorm room at University of Georgia’s Boggs Hall on Aug. 6 with every intention of moving out as soon as possible. This freshman history major from Atlanta is currently in supplementary housing at Boggs, living in a study room turned dorm room with three other roommates. Gathany picked his housing assignment with freshmen criminal justice major Anthony Belvedere in late May. The two freshmen went onto the UGA Housing website and chose what they thought was a typical dorm in Boggs since it had the same floor plan as the others. “This room number came up as a normal, cookie- cutter Boggs room ,” Belvedere said. “We chose it completely randomly. There were other vacancies.” About a month after they chose the dorm, housing emailed them their other roommates’ names, which is when they realized they would be in supplementary housing. “If we had looked at the fine print, it showed that there were four slots for that room,” Gathany said. “So we couldn’t ...

STONY BROOK - Students began moving into their dorms Friday at Stony Brook University , and a growing number are choosing to live in gender- neutral housing . Senior Derrick Wegner says he was a bit nervous when he first arrived at the school. As a transgender man, he says he was relieved to find gender-inclusive housing on campus. "You're just accepted into this community that's already prepared for you," he says. Stony Brook has had a gender- neutral housing program for 10 years. What started as a small program has grown to include about 200 students. School officials say gender-inclusive housing is for everyone, meaning anyone of any gender can share the same dorm room. Even relatives of different genders can share the same suite. Students must meet two requirements to participate in the program: they must be 18 years old and have to sign a contract agreeing to respect the gender identities of their neighbors.
