Hunting for apartments in Missoula remains difficult | Local

When Matt Metzger and Carly Wingert showed up to view apartments early Friday afternoon at a complex on the south end of town, the property management office was closed. Another tenant pointed them to the mailbox with applications they could take and fill out. But it was empty. So they were off to make more calls. They'd already looked at a couple of places, including one that still was under renovation. "The struggle is real," Wingert said, still cheerful nonetheless. "It's not easy at all," Metzger said. After looking at just a handful of units, they were already talking about how to adjust their budget and possibly work overtime to afford a suitable home.  Wingert and Metzger plan to finish their degrees at the University of Montana — he's studying wildlife biology and she's interested in literature and the environment. They're among a slew of students looking for housing around the same time. Despite all the construction that's been ...

Second Briarcliff apartment complex celebrates completion

Briarcliff Development Co. plans a ribbon cutting Tuesday on its $42. 5 million apartment complex that has added 340 high- end residential units to the Northland. The Landing at Briarcliff, which accepted its first tenants in September and now is 55 percent leased, has nine residential buildings, a club house, and a stand-alone fitness facility. “The fitness center is a real plus,” said Richie Benninghoven, the development company ’s president. “We may give a tenant a free session with a personal trainer or a massage as an incentive for signing a lease.” Other tenant incentives include a large, heated, outdoor saltwater pool , pet-friendly buildings, community garden plots , and — something that’s proved popular — the ability to paint accent walls in the units. The company allows one living room wall and one wall in each bedroom to be painted according to tenant choice, choosing from a provided palette of bright red, slate gray, navy blue and yellow. “Slate gray is winning,” Benn...

Hanging Out | Westword

Three of the four men charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting the girl are also behind bars. The men are from Honduras, immigrants who found a home at the Heatherwood Apartments. The complex, near Peoria and Colfax in Aurora, is a racial melting pot , one that came to a boil on August 7, when a girl trying to leap to womanhood in a single summer got a very adult lesson. The violence bred more violence -- and more victims. News accounts the next day reported that a seventy-person mob had delivered street justice to one of the accused rapists. Although the reports weren't quite right -- nothing in this saga is -- street justice may be the only justice here. Anna grew up in the neighborhood and has a huge family of siblings and half-siblings. Anna has another daughter who was also taken away by Social Services when Anna went to prison. The girls have a baby brother, too, a child Anna gave birth to after she got out of prison two years ago. That baby has a different father w...

How the City Nails Landlords for Their Tenants’ Illegal Airbnb Rentals – Commercial Observer

T wo weeks ago, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge handed down a decision designed to strike fear in the hearts of landlords. Justice James d’Auguste ordered that an independent receiver be appointed to manage two Midtown residential buildings where the landlords allegedly allowed illegal Airbnb rentals to occur. The case, which began when the city sued the landlords in February 2015, has become one of the battlegrounds in a larger war between city enforcement agencies and short- term rental sites like Airbnb. Airbnb, which was recently valued at $31 billion, refuses to release the exact addresses of hosts who break the law by renting their entire apartment for less than 30 days without being present. Without the addresses and names of Airbnb violators , the city mostly targets the owners of buildings that rack up the most illegal hotel complaints from 311 calls and the New York City Department of Buildings. “This entire model—and it was intentional [by the city]—is complaint-drive...
