Michigan State University welcomes 8,000 new students this fall

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Administrators at Michigan State University are expecting 8,000 first-year students to arrive on campus next week.  The class of 2021 is considered one of the largest in the school's history. Overall, MSU received 36 ,000 applications from prospective students, but only 8,000 were admitted. They will move onto campus Monday, with classes scheduled to begin Wednesday.  Nearly 16,000 students will be living on the East Lansing campus this academic year in residence halls and on- campus apartments . As in past years, a number of volunteers will be pitching in to help with move in, including other students, faculty, staff, alumni and community volunteers, according to a news released from the university.  More than 72 percent of new students are from Michigan, which the university said reflects its long- standing land grant tradition . Market shift pitches Dranoff toward condos on South Broad corner

Image
Developer Carl Dranoff is planning 28 stories of luxury condos at Broad and Pine Streets, instead of the hotel-and-apartment hybrid he previously had in mind for the site, as Center City heads toward a likely near-term glut of both rental housing and hotel guest rooms . The developer’s earlier vision of a 22-story building with 76 hotel rooms and 83 apartments known as the Hyde — to have been developed with the Los Angeles hospitality mogul Sam Nazarian ’s SBE Entertainment Group — has been supplanted by a new proposal with 56 “high-end” condos, Dranoff said in an email Tuesday. Dranoff ultimately decided that the location along the strip of Broad Street south of City Hall, known as Avenue of the Arts, “lends itself best to a condo project,” spokeswoman Barbara Gall Sheehan said in a follow-up email. “We think there is strong demand for high-end/luxury condos in premier neighborhoods, like Avenue of the Arts,” she said. Dranoff said th...

Battle Over Pesticide Pits Demand For Proof Against Precautions For Health

Claudia Angulo and her four children live in Orange Cove, California, a corner of Fresno County known for its citrus. She says when planes fly over the orange grove next to their apartment building and spray pesticides on the trees, she and her family experience headaches , exhaustion and difficulty breathing. But Angulo is concerned about an even more serious health problem in her 11-year-old son Isaac. When she was pregnant with him, she worked at a packing house, handling freshly picked citrus . After Isaac was born, Angulo says she noticed his development seemed slow and strange. “I saw that he didn’t play the same as other kids,” she says. “He didn’t learn the same.” She says his behavior was aggressive and antisocial. And she tells a story about the time he even threatened suicide — when he was only four years old. When he was five, a doctor diagnosed with him ADHD. Angulo says several other pregnant women she worked with at the packing house also had children who developed behav...

One of Cherry Creek’s most active developers plunked down $35 million last week for two plots of prime Cherry Creek real estate with plans for fancy apartments and a new hotel. BMC Investments plans to turn two buildings along St. Paul Street and another on Josephine Street into two apartment buildings up to seven or eight floors tall and a cheaper hotel for travelers who don’t want to shell out top dollar. The three projects will total between $150 million and $ 180 million worth of development, company CEO Matt Joblon said. “We are the biggest believers of Cherry Creek long term , and we’re looking to do as much as possible here,” he said. “We want to commit a lot of our resources, money and time in buying and building ...
