Chapman University picks up speed on housing more of its students

Image
ORANGE — As Chapman University helps students move in this week, it will be housing 37 percent of its undergraduates on campus, while many more will spread out into rented rooms and houses in nearby Old Towne Orange neighborhoods . Within four years, the university expects to have 48 percent of its students living in dorms, one project away from meeting Chapman President Daniele Struppa ’s commitment to the community to get half of its students into campus-controlled housing and out of neighborhoods. For years, college life and neighborhood serenity haven ’t always mixed. The volume of residents’ complaints growing until Chapman paused expansion plans in 2015 to first address the friction. Struppa took over the reins at Chapman last year as neighbors’ frustration with parties, noise, parking and bad behavior peaked . He assured residents that getting more students into campus-run housing would be one of his first priorities. Chapman University bought property adjacent to its Pather...

USC Village Has a Trader Joe's, Target and Restaurants. Are They Open to Everyone?

Image
EXPAND The new USC Village is dominated by dorms and apartments that will house 2,500 students — but it also has a Trader Joe's. Hillel Aron The University of Southern California has long been criticized for being an inward-looking institution, one that insulates itself from the surrounding neighborhoods of South Los Angeles . Its new expansion project, USC Village, is hailed for changing that. The 15-acre, $ 700 million housing and retail development brings a Trader Joe's to South L.A. for the first time, as well as a Target, with many other businesses (15 restaurants and nearly as many shops) to come — and with them, jobs. A recent New York Times piece lavished praise upon the development, which has its official groundbreaking on Saturday, saying the project "brings together one of California’s poorest areas and one of its wealthiest universities." Indeed, as part of the project, the university contributed $20 million to the city's affordable housing trust fu...

University Village apartments to be ready for fall semester

Students will be able to begin leasing University Village apartments this month, and the new residences will open in the fall. Leasing will begin before general housing signup in late March, so that students can plan accordingly if they don’t get an apartment. Of the 800 rooms available, 720 will be leased to undergraduates, 40 to graduate students and 40 to law students, following agreements made between the schools before construction began. As the agreement stands now, medical students will not be able to lease rooms. To sign up to live in the Village, undergraduates must have junior or senior credit standing . The longer the student has lived in on- campus housing , the greater the chance he or she will have to live in the Village. If the 720 rooms do not get filled after giving priority to these students, leasing will open to students that live off campus and want to move back on campus. The Village, which was estimated to cost $61 million last year, will have 41 one-bedroom, on...
