Apartment developer makes his case for building in southeastern part of Manchester

By KEVIN LANDRIGAN New Hampshire Union Leader August 20. 2017 11:16PM unit apartment complex ."> Elizabeth Voyiatzakis of Lucas Road in Manchester says her rural area is not the right location for a 165- unit apartment complex .  (Allegra Boverman/Union Leader) MANCHESTER — During three City Hall meetings over three months, residents of Lucas and South Mammoth Road desperately and sometimes loudly fought a luxury townhouse apartment rezoning request they maintain would forever change one of the last rural enclaves in the city. “I want somebody with a vested interest in keeping the land nice and this plan just won’t keep it that way,” said Elizabeth Voyiatzakis of 411 Lucas Road . Well-known developer William Socha got his turn at bat last week and made the most of it, filling the Manchester aldermanic chamber with employees, friends and residents of his other complexes. Their message? This development will produce $23 million in construction and generate $1.1 million to...

Chesterfield leads region in home sales, but faces affordable housing challenge | News

Chesterfield County again led the region for single- family home sales last year, but faces challenges when it comes to housing affordability.  That's according to Laura Lafayette, chief executive officer of the Richmond Association of Realtors, during her presentation to the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors this week. In the county, 5,460 single- family homes sold in 2016, a 13.5 percent increase from 2015 when Chesterfield again led the region. Sales in Chesterfield outpaced Henrico County , the second hottest housing market in the region last year, by 1,805 homes. The average sales price in Chesterfield was $266,484. Lafayette said she expected the number to be the same, if not slightly higher, by the end of 2017. "This is obviously a sellers market. If you want to purchase a house, you’ve got to bring a full-price offer," Lafayette said. While Chesterfield led the region for single- family home sales , Henrico came in first for condo and town home sales ...

Watertown Daily Times | As popularity and prices rise, developers build more tiny units

ARTICLE OPTIONS Throughout his early 60s, Brad Buchner and his wife, Elizabeth, lived in the kind of house that many near-retirees dream of: a peaceful, manageable ranch- style property tucked in a quiet Poconos town surrounded by trees, lakes, and plentiful open space . Costing anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000, tiny homes designed by Escape Homes enable anyone to travel around the country in a single-family home. As it turns out, however, that’s exactly what Buchner and his wife don’t want as they think about the next years of their lives. Three years ago, the Buchners packed their things and headed to Philadelphia, settling down in a Center City rental . As if ditching their longtime rural digs weren ’t enough, the pair also abandoned spaciousness, swapping their three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for precisely 345 total square feet . The transition has meant parting ways with a fully finished basement and a home office, and adjusting to an ovenless kitchenette and two miniature...

North Cheyenne affordable apartment complex clears rezoning hurdle | Local News

CHEYENNE – A proposed apartment complex that would offer low- and middle- income housing in north Cheyenne won a key stamp of approval Monday night when the City Council voted to rezone land for high-density development. Councilman Dicky Shanor was absent for the 9-0 decision. Developer Summit Housing Group plans to build a three-building, 72-unit complex for low- and middle- income residents east of Converse Avenue between Storey and Dell Range boulevards . Sam Lang, a Summit senior project manager , said his firm is aiming to break ground on the project by early next year pending city approval of building plans . Despite indications that the council would support the move, nearby homeowners who oppose the project again came out to protest the developer’s plans and city processes . Krystal Lewis, who lives on Plainview Road just east of where the apartments would sit, said the complex was stretching the city’s zoning rules and development code. The complex didn’t call for e...

With steep plunge in apartment building, US home construction slumped in July | National Politics

WASHINGTON — Homebuilders pulled back sharply on construction of apartment complexes in July, causing housing starts to tumble to a three-month low. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that housing starts fell 4 .8 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.16 million. Groundbreakings for multi- family buildings such as apartments slumped 17.1 percent, while single- family house construction slipped 0 .5 percent. Home construction has increased 2.4 percent year-to-date, but the gains have done little to offset the dwindling number of homes listed for sale. The shortage of properties for sale has pushed prices up at a faster pace than income growth, making home ownership less affordable for many would-be buyers. Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities , said that because of the lack of homes on the market "builders are attempting to meet that need but are hamstrung to a degree by shortages of skilled workers" and land restrictions...

Most expensive rents in Florida? Would you believe Miramar?

Five Broward County cities rank as the priciest rental markets in Florida — and, no, Fort Lauderdale doesn ’t top the list. Miramar leads with a July average rent of $1,800 a month, up 3.2 percent from a year ago, according to RENTCafĂ©, a nationwide apartment search website . Adrian Rosenberg, a representative for the website, noted that Miramar rents have increased steadily in recent years and that more than half of Miramar’s apartment stock is made up of high-end buildings, which includes 1,500 new units delivered since 2013. Despite the recent building boom of luxury apartments in Fort Lauderdale , Broward’s county seat comes in only at No. 2 at $1,751 a month. Davie is third at $1,739. Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines are tied at No. 4 at $1,653 a month. In another upset, Miami came in at only No. 6 ($1,587) because lower- priced neighborhoods drove down the average rent, Rosenberg said. West Palm Beach was No. 7 at $1,344. No other Palm Beach County community made the top 1...
