The Biggest Restaurant Cookbooks of Fall 2017

Image
The best restaurant cookbooks are like time capsules, preserving a moment, a feeling. That’s what this year’s stack of restaurant- focused books achieves — with variable levels of success. Don’t miss chef Wylie Dufresne ’s look back at wd~50 or the new two-volume set from NYC’s highly lauded experiential dining room Eleven Madison Park . Casual restaurants, from the Publican in Chicago to Juhu Beach Club in Oakland, also got the book treatment this year. Each collection stands alone as a testament to the hard work of a team pushing for one pristine goal. Cheers to the Publican: Recipes and Ramblings from an American Beer Hall Paul Kahan, Cosmo Goss, Rachel Holtzman Lorena Jones Books, September 19 Starting with the first time I ate at there, shortly after its opening in 2008, the Publican has been my favorite restaurant. It was an instantaneous love — the room, the food, a swirling feeling of commensality and broad-shouldered abundance. So for me, the promise of this book, Cheers t...

Portugal Dominated Angola for Centuries. Now the Roles Are Reversed.

“And suddenly they were able to help us and to buy things that we cannot buy,” he said. “It was like a housekeeper buying your house. That is awkward.” The conditions in both countries created a perfect match: As Portugal reeled from a financial crisis a few years ago, Angolans were enjoying an oil boom that provided enormous opportunities for self-enrichment by the elite, particularly the president’s family and inner circle. Angola is often listed as one of the world’s most corrupt nations. And Portugal has been singled out for its laxness in reining in money laundering and bribery, particularly in its dealings with Angolans, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the research and policy organization of the world’s richest countries. “In Angola, they call Portugal the laundromat,” said Ana Gomes, a Portuguese lawmaker in the European Parliament and a member of Portugal’s governing Socialist Party . “It’s because it is.” But the two nations’ relationsh...

History's Headlines: Dorney Park - WFMZ

History's Headlines: Dorney Park ALLENTOWN, Pa. -  On any given warm summer day , there is a line at Dorney Park . The amusement mecca, whose history goes back over 150 years, can be found full of patrons, some of whom arrive by the busload, to ride on or dive in any one of a number of attractions. Some hail from as far away as New York or Philadelphia. Others are from any one of the local suburbs of Allentown and Bethlehem. Born in an era when beating the heat meant a cool walk in the woods, not an air-conditioned room, Dorney has always had its devoted fans. Some old timers claim it has changed too much and miss the rides of their youth. But in truth, like it has in the past, Dorney reflects the era of which it is in. Always has. The park’s founder, Solomon P. Dorney, was a Pennsylvania German farmer who lived in Cetronia. He acquired the land the park was on from his father. It had been in the family since the 1770s. Now a lot of people of Dorney’s generation were content to ...

After 50 years as a New Yorker, beauty-product maven June Jacobs is embracing the old and the new in the city

June Jacobs has been in the beauty and wellness business for over 30 years, and a New Yorker for more than 50. Jacobs is the creator of the June Jacobs Spa Collection , offered to guests in Grand Hyatt hotels and also found at spas, resorts, and in stores.  We caught up with June to talk about her Upper East Side neighborhood , her love of wraparound terraces , and why she craves a little bit of the old New York City and a little bit of the new. Is this your dream neighborhood, or is there someplace else in NYC you’d prefer to settle? I wouldn't say that it is my dream neighborhood, but it is by far the best neighborhood for me to live in. It’s very accessible to all of the parts of the city that I want to be near, and I don’t picture myself moving elsewhere. Do you own or rent? Rent. How’d you find it? One of my close friends was renting the apartment I live in now and I was always envious of it. She got engaged and was going to move in with her fiancĂ©, so I knew it was going for...
