University Village apartments to be ready for fall semester

Students will be able to begin leasing University Village apartments this month, and the new residences will open in the fall. Leasing will begin before general housing signup in late March, so that students can plan accordingly if they don’t get an apartment. Of the 800 rooms available, 720 will be leased to undergraduates, 40 to graduate students and 40 to law students, following agreements made between the schools before construction began. As the agreement stands now, medical students will not be able to lease rooms. To sign up to live in the Village, undergraduates must have junior or senior credit standing . The longer the student has lived in on- campus housing , the greater the chance he or she will have to live in the Village. If the 720 rooms do not get filled after giving priority to these students, leasing will open to students that live off campus and want to move back on campus. The Village, which was estimated to cost $61 million last year, will have 41 one-bedroom, on...

View Full Caption NYCEDC HUNTERS POINT — Critics of the city's plan to build a school, offices and 1,000 apartments on the Long Island City waterfront called it "irresponsible" to develop the site because it's located in a hurricane evacuation zone that's prone to flooding during storms. Advocates said they would rather see the two city-owned parcels — located next to the East River at the end of 44th Drive — converted to public parkland, with plantings, oyster beds and other green infrastructure to help make the area more resistant to floods.  "We think continuing to build in a flood plain is irresponsible," said Diane Hendry, a member of the LIC Coalition, an advocacy group that launched a petition last week opposing the city's plans. "The land is a natural wetlands. It should be preserv...

Victoria’s least- dense neighbourhood would become a little more crowded under a draft plan. Townhouses and small apartments along Fairfield Road, row houses throughout the community and secondary suites in duplexes and small-lot houses are all part of the mix in the draft Gonzales neighbourhood plan . Coun. Chris Coleman, council liaison to the neighbourhood, said the plan also includes recommendations regarding alternative transportation, parks, ecological preservation, small commercial centres and heritage areas. Coleman said the proposals for extra density might be contentious for some, and council will undoubtedly hear from those folks when it holds a public meeting on the proposals this fall. “But I think the expectation in the [ Official Community Plan ] is that we would see increased density in all neighbourhoods,” he said. City staff note that with about five per cent of the city’s population — 4,175 resident...
