Apartment tower in Bay Village wins approval

DEVELOPMENT Apartment tower in Bay Village wins approval An apartment tower in Boston’s Bay Village neighborhood cleared a key hurdle this week when it was approved by the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals. Despite concern from some residents that the 199-foot building was out of scale with the low- slung brick neighborhood behind it, ZBA members voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the project. Transom Development wants to put 133 apartments on what’s now a surface parking lot and empty lot alongside the Revere Hotel. They hope to start construction in spring of 2018. — TIM LOGAN TRANSPORTATION Peter Pan reaches settlement in disabilities discrimination case A Massachusetts bus company accused of discriminating against passengers with disabilities has reached a settlement with federal prosecutors that resolves the allegations. The US attorney’s office in Boston said Wednesday that Peter Pan Bus Lines Inc. violated federal law by failing to ensure its motor coaches were access...

How Churches and Service Clubs Can Ease Housing Crunch

“It’s kind of in my bloodline,” said Jack Barr. Contests, events & more from Tyee and select partners His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all Freemasons. Barr followed in their footsteps, and is the president of the Vancouver Masonic Centre Association today . As political scientist Robert Putnam noted in his famous work Bowling Alone , community groups like the Freemasons have been declining for the last few decades. Religious groups like the Roman Catholic Knights of Columbus, military groups like Legions, service clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis, even youth scouting groups and bowling leagues have seen participation plummet. Some longtime churches have also seen congregations shrink dramatically . Barr says freemasonry’s most recent heyday was the late-1960s and early-1970s. But the organizations are still around, and many own property. A number of groups are facing the question of what to do with their land and buildings as needs change, along with their abili...

Sierra Leone Mudslides: A Preventable Social Disaster or an Inevitable ‘Natural Disaster’?

By Phillip Garjay Innis What lessons can African countries learn from Sierra Leone ’s devastating mudslides? Was the disaster due to natural events or is there a social dimension? Is there anything such as a ‘ natural disaster ’? What can be done to reduce risks? On August 14, 2017, torrential rainfall caused a hillside to collapse in Sierra Leone ’s capital city. This torrential downpour triggered mudslides that killed hundreds of residents and destroyed properties. As of August 19, 2017, the death toll is placed at 467, with approximately 600 still missing. Heavy rainfall is not a strange phenomenon in Sierra Leone . The country experiences heavy annual rainfall and is  ranked 12th globally  in annual precipitation by rainfall. Sierra Leone received  over 2,500 mm of rain from 2013 to 2017, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Sierra Leone is therefore familiar with heavy rainfall . Torrential downpours are common in August and September. The country has ...

The Los Angeles Dodgers recorded their 90th victory Aug . 24, the fastest any Dodger club has reached that important milestone. If they achieve the projected 116 wins in their 162- game regular season , they’ll go down as one of the greatest baseball teams of all time. Of course, I have two adult children who weren’t alive the last time the Dodgers were even in a World Series so anything short of a ring this time is, well, a loss. This has been a truly magical season, which makes it all the more disappointing that the Dodgers’ covetous ownership continues to snub its fans with its cockamamie cable TV contract scheme . With all these exciting, charismatic, budding and veteran all-stars and their unbelievable exploits, it’s hard to understand why they would willingly write off a generation of new fans. Frankrupt McCourt would approve. It is said that greed is good. The Dodgers are both, and what an unfortunate missed opportunity this year has been. Meanwhile, I told you in my last co...
