Dorm Decor Ideas to Transform Your Home Away from Home

Image
Between hitting the books and intense extracurriculars, the last thing you’ll want to do is come home to a  lacklustre dorm room to pull an exam-cramming all-nighter. And while it may seem like there’s nothing you can do to make those blank walls and basic furniture look cute (it would be so much easier  if all dorm rooms were painted millennial pink, right?), there are tons of easy ways to add personality and style to the small space you’re about to call home for the next year. This modern art- inspired duvet cover is a room game changer —it’s got a bold pattern, a pop of colour and is made from 100 percent cotton for a super comfy (and stylish) snooze. Home has plenty of room for the kids AND an outdoorsy collection

SEATTLE — And now, A Western folk ode to some newish Western folks : OH, GIVE ME A HOME … The first space Steven Rinella and Katie Finch shared didn ’t have much space at all: an 800-square-foot apartment in Brooklyn, outfitted with “hand-me-down furniture, from stoop sales,” Finch says. Her job with Amazon blazed their trail West, where they initially rented a Tudor in Madison Park before discovering a new, unmistakably modern option in Magnolia. “We had never thought about a modern home,” Finch says. Once they did, Rinella says, “I was opposed to it.” The vista is spectacular, though, and with three levels, 3,400 square feet and four bedrooms, there’s plenty of wide-open territory for a family (they have three kids, ages 2, 4 and 7). They staked their claim, then mapped out a plan to balance the modern aesthetic with “warm and cozy” furnishings, materials and finishes. Step One: They hired interior designer Joy Rondello of J+Studio, whom they met through the national, customized ...

High-end rentals, dog park included, going up near Oakbrook Terrace

A Northfield-based company has broken ground on a project that will bring 315 high-end apartments to a stalled mixed-use development near Oakbrook Terrace. Interforum Holdings will start construction of its Lakeside Village of Oak Brook luxury apartments as soon as the weather permits. The 500,000-square-foot, four-story building will be on roughly 6 acres along Royce Boulevard . "We went into the area to develop a project because we see a serious lack of luxury, Class A rental communities in the area," said Alex Zdanov, CEO of Interforum Holdings. "A current trend right now is for people to rent." Zdanov said Lakeside Village will provide a rental option for executives and other professionals working in Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace and other nearby communities. The apartment building will be in the Oak Brook Lakes development , which has 82 undeveloped acres off Butterfield Road, just east of where it splits from 22nd Street. Offic...

Before & After: Remodeling a Dated 80s Kitchen to Sell

Rosanna was about to put her condo on the market and knew she would have a much better go of it if she updated her kitchen. After a few contractor related stops and starts, she now has a kitchen that is modern, sleek and much more open. From Rosanna: This was the original kitchen for this condo built in the 1980s. It felt small, dark and cramped. It came with yellowed cabinets, linoleum floors, and tiled counters. We were going to be putting this condo on the market for sale so we wanted to completely renovate it to bring it into this decade and give it fresh appeal. The process from start to finish, including design, took 3-4 months because we did have a few contractor issues that required some do overs. But this included renovating other areas of the condo like the bathroom, painting the entire place and replacing all the floors. We had a couple other setbacks, like the refrigerator we ordered wouldn't quite fit the cabinetry, so we had to re-order a size down and the dishwa...
