USC Village Has a Trader Joe's, Target and Restaurants. Are They Open to Everyone?

Image
EXPAND The new USC Village is dominated by dorms and apartments that will house 2,500 students — but it also has a Trader Joe's. Hillel Aron The University of Southern California has long been criticized for being an inward-looking institution, one that insulates itself from the surrounding neighborhoods of South Los Angeles . Its new expansion project, USC Village, is hailed for changing that. The 15-acre, $ 700 million housing and retail development brings a Trader Joe's to South L.A. for the first time, as well as a Target, with many other businesses (15 restaurants and nearly as many shops) to come — and with them, jobs. A recent New York Times piece lavished praise upon the development, which has its official groundbreaking on Saturday, saying the project "brings together one of California’s poorest areas and one of its wealthiest universities." Indeed, as part of the project, the university contributed $20 million to the city's affordable housing trust fu...

Greenbrier Gardens residents displaced after flood damage | TheCabin.net

More than 20 residents at Greenbrier Gardens Apartments have been displaced due to flood damage. Senior Area Manager for Leddic Management Group Michelle Cook , who oversees the apartments, said residents living in 22 apartments must vacate their homes by Sunday. “Despite rumors, these are not being condemned,” she told the Log Cabin Democrat on Wednesday. “Our main priority is the health and safety of residents and the apartments affected [from flood waters] are in need of repair.” Looking into the apartments, it was clear water levels rose about one-foot off the ground, ruining carpeting and damaging furniture and residents’ other personal belongings . Greenbrier Alderman Joyce Johnson was at the apartments helping three family members living in three separate apartments pack their belongings Wednesday . “We need help, we need supplies out here,” she said, noting residents did not have long before having to leave their homes and find storage for their belongings. Johnson sai...

Residents gather belongings after Three Oaks apartment fire

Image
THREE OAKS, Mich. (WNDU) - UPDATE People who escaped an apartment fire in Three Oaks are going back to save any belongings they can carry. 14 families had to evacuate as Hidden Harbor Villas caught fire early Saturday morning . A Michigan State Police fire investigator says the fire started in a vacant apartment on the second floor near the utility closet but he says it's not suspicious and he doesn't believe it was arson. That's not much comfort to the families, only two of whom had renters insurance. Melissa Lawson, one of those affected, said, "We were running to just get out the door. She had some clothes in the diaper bag, but she was just in her diaper and we grabbed a blanket. Nobody had shoes, no one. " Peter Trigg, another person affected, said, "Honestly, I'm not worried about what I can save. I thought everything was a loss, and everything I can find is just a blessing. It's absolutely a blessing." Neighbors say t...

Why the dismissed 'Google Fiber' suit matters

Image
Google Fiber (Photo: Custom) Last week, U.S. District Judge David J. Hale dismissed what became known in Louisville as the " Google Fiber case ," possibly setting a precedent for similar cases across the country. The case was brought by BellSouth Telecommunications LLC , which operates as AT&T Kentucky, because of Louisville Metro Government 's " One Touch Make Ready " ordinance. It passed in February 2016. The legislation gave third- party internet service providers (Google Fiber, specifically) unfettered access to utility poles in the city — including those owned by AT&T — so the companies could run fiber and other cable for their own networks. The city saw the legislation as an important step toward improving Louisville's internet landscape . AT&T sued Metro Government , contending that it was inappropriate and unfair for the city to make such an ordinance because AT&T (BellSouth) owned the poles and therefore controlled the right of w...

Yellow Pages to test 'opt-in' model for city apartments

Image
TOM PULLAR-STRECKER Last updated 05:00, August 14 2017 Tom Pullar-Strecker/FAIRFAX NZ Yellow believes it has a bright future. The Yellow and White Pages won 't be delivered to apartment units in the three main centres unless people ask for them, if a trial in Wellington proves popular.    The partial step towards an "opt-in" system for the directories could later be extended to office buildings and follows a decision by Yellow to axe 10 of its local editions . But Yellow's interim chief executive Darren Linton said the company's business plan was to return to revenue and profit growth within three years, as its digital business grew and new services came on stream. Printed directories accounted for 60 per cent of its sales – or $56 million – in the year to June. But Linton forecast that would drop to 25 per cent within three years. In another sign of the way traditional advertising has been turned on its head by the internet, burger company Wendy's announ...

Offbeat: Cops and ballers party at the Meadows

After decades hoping for an event like the one held yesterday at Gosling Meadows in Portsmouth, two cops who spent their formative years in the development got to party with residents and provide some tasty barbecue. Ken Tilley and Mike McNeil rolled up in the Soul Patrol food truck to participate in the family event coordinated by Jason Corkum and Marcy Baer, who spent months planning and weeks renovating the recreation areas inside the neighborhood. The event included a basketball tournament, face painting and a raffle for the youngest participants. Everything just came together, said Corkum, even the weather cooperated. Check out story, photos and all the people and businesses to thank for supporting the celebration. Portsmouth packs ‘em in And I’m not talking about tourists. There’s been a steady stream of applications for the development of accessory dwelling units , according to city Planning Director Juliet Walker . People either really love their in-laws, or are looking fo...

Recycling: Some take it, others leave it | Local News

Image
Recycle. Reuse. Reduce. Reclaim. Cheryl Oliver is a true believer. Her husband, Jack, is not quite so sure. For Cheryl, there is no choice because she regards recycling as crucial for the survival of the planet. Jack said he gets it, but doesn’t think a few people can make any real difference. The house divided is a microcosm of communities when it comes to recycling. Cheryl believes everyone should do their part, while Jack believes that since not everyone is doing their part, why should he? “The problem with recycling is that most people don’t do it or won’t do it,” Jack said. “I think it’s mostly due to people being plain lazy.” Jack has a point – recycling takes more effort than just throwing everything into the same trash can. There are people who might recycle but don’t because they simply don’t know how. With paper, plastic, aluminum, metal and a myriad of other color-coded options for recyclable material, deciding where each thing should go can be troublesome. ...
