Lake Wylie SC residents mull runoff woes

Fish, most of them the length of an outstretched hand outstretched , seem to know Tea Hoffmann. They form a school at the sound of footsteps on her dock. They wait in the shallows for morsels of cereal or bread. And shallower and shallower they are. “I’m all for people selling their property, making money and all of that,” said Hoffmann, one of six homeowners with docks on a small cove off Mill Creek. “I do not want them just clearing everything and making this cove fill up with dirt.” Hoffmann moved to the area five years ago, but she hadn’t seen anything like what she did Monday. Rain fell, and water began rushing from a construction site at the head of the cove. Only it wasn’t just water. Hoffmann photographed and videoed muddy water pouring into the lake. “That’s the first day that it happened,” Hoffmann said. “It even stained the rocks, it was so bad.” Apartments have been under construction just beside Senator Road for a few months. When it rains, water runs into the lake. But...

How Churches and Service Clubs Can Ease Housing Crunch

“It’s kind of in my bloodline,” said Jack Barr. Contests, events & more from Tyee and select partners His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all Freemasons. Barr followed in their footsteps, and is the president of the Vancouver Masonic Centre Association today . As political scientist Robert Putnam noted in his famous work Bowling Alone , community groups like the Freemasons have been declining for the last few decades. Religious groups like the Roman Catholic Knights of Columbus, military groups like Legions, service clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis, even youth scouting groups and bowling leagues have seen participation plummet. Some longtime churches have also seen congregations shrink dramatically . Barr says freemasonry’s most recent heyday was the late-1960s and early-1970s. But the organizations are still around, and many own property. A number of groups are facing the question of what to do with their land and buildings as needs change, along with their abili...

Waltham apartment complex fire was arson

WALTHAM — The massive fire that destroyed a big apartment complex under construction in Waltham in July was caused by arson, investigators said Thursday, with damages estimated at $110 million. Initially, fire officials had said they did not believe the 10-alarm fire was suspicious. But once they began investigating the charred remains in detail, they began to rethink the cause, Fire Chief Paul Ciccone said. Advertisement “We systematically eliminated all possible causes,” said the state’s fire marshal, Peter J. Ostroskey. “That led us to this point.” The blaze began in the early morning on Sunday, July 23, and demolished the five-building complex on Cooper Street near the Charles River. The 264 units were scheduled to open next year. Get Fast Forward in your inbox: Forget yesterday's news. Get what you need today in this early-morning email.
