David Engberg wheels through the third apartment he’s had in two years. PHOTO BY KARLOS RENE AYALA David Engberg and James Clark cling to their independence by a thread. Both men were born with cerebral palsy and live off Supplemental Security Income , or SSI—a stipend that puts them under the federal poverty line . So far, they’ve managed to keep a roof over their heads by splitting the cost of rent. But since the affordable housing crisis hit , the roommates have been priced out of two apartments in just two years. The stressful shuffling was witnessed by Jennifer Schmidt, their case manager at InAlliance, a nonprofit that provides employment and living services for people with disabilities. Advocates such as Schmidt are becoming increasingly alarmed by the way skyrocketing rents are affecting Sacramento County ’s 14, 000 disabled residents . Several independent surveys suggest Sacramento is experiencing some of the largest rent increases in the nation. Few feel those tectonic ma...

Portofino Apartments to open on West 34th Street in July | Lubbock Online

Granite countertops and stainless steel appliances have been installed in the first Portofino Apartments on 34th Street, just west of Milwaukee Avenue, before the grand opening July 19 .  Sara Fierro, director of operations for Asken Properties , said five buildings are scheduled to open for residents to begin moving in July 15. The clubhouse, a 3,500-square-foot building, will also be ready for the office staff to move in by that time. Up to and through the grand opening event , those who sign a lease at Portofino will be given a free iPad Mini , Fierro said. Door prizes will also be given out during the grand opening event July 19 in the Portofino clubhouse. In December, she hopes 210 apartments will be ready for rental. “We’re opening up five buildings July 15 , which is about 35 apartments. But every two weeks after that, we’ll keep opening up another couple of buildings,” Fierro said. Units in Portofino won’t be the cheapest in town, Fierro said, but she believes they are compe...

Recycling: Some take it, others leave it | Local News

Image
Recycle. Reuse. Reduce. Reclaim. Cheryl Oliver is a true believer. Her husband, Jack, is not quite so sure. For Cheryl, there is no choice because she regards recycling as crucial for the survival of the planet. Jack said he gets it, but doesn’t think a few people can make any real difference. The house divided is a microcosm of communities when it comes to recycling. Cheryl believes everyone should do their part, while Jack believes that since not everyone is doing their part, why should he? “The problem with recycling is that most people don’t do it or won’t do it,” Jack said. “I think it’s mostly due to people being plain lazy.” Jack has a point – recycling takes more effort than just throwing everything into the same trash can. There are people who might recycle but don’t because they simply don’t know how. With paper, plastic, aluminum, metal and a myriad of other color-coded options for recyclable material, deciding where each thing should go can be troublesome. ...

Hunting for apartments in Missoula remains difficult | Local

When Matt Metzger and Carly Wingert showed up to view apartments early Friday afternoon at a complex on the south end of town, the property management office was closed. Another tenant pointed them to the mailbox with applications they could take and fill out. But it was empty. So they were off to make more calls. They'd already looked at a couple of places, including one that still was under renovation. "The struggle is real," Wingert said, still cheerful nonetheless. "It's not easy at all," Metzger said. After looking at just a handful of units, they were already talking about how to adjust their budget and possibly work overtime to afford a suitable home.  Wingert and Metzger plan to finish their degrees at the University of Montana — he's studying wildlife biology and she's interested in literature and the environment. They're among a slew of students looking for housing around the same time. Despite all the construction that's been ...
