Apartment complex proposed for ‘downtown’ Lynbrook | Herald Community Newspapers

By Mike Smollins Village of Lynbrook officials are mulling a proposal by development company Mill Creek Residential to build a luxury apartment complex on Rocklyn Avenue, near Merrick Road. Hot Skates, Fun Station USA and Hi Tech Security now occupy the three-acre site. “Today’s apartment residents are craving a downtown living experience along with convenient access to a mix of urban and suburban lifestyle experiences ,” Russell Tepper, a senior managing director at MCR, wrote in an email to the Herald. “Lynbrook’s new residential community would serve all types of residents … so that they may take advantage of the luxuries of suburban living , without sacrificing the trappings of an urban, modern lifestyle.” MCR acquires and operates high- end rental communities across the country, and has built complexes in West Hempstead, Mineola, Yonkers, Westchester County and New Jersey. Tepper said that the company would create a transit- oriented residential community — a walkable nei...

Waltham apartment complex fire was arson

Image
WALTHAM — The massive fire that destroyed a big apartment complex under construction in Waltham in July was caused by arson, investigators said Thursday, with damages estimated at $110 million. Initially, fire officials had said they did not believe the 10-alarm fire was suspicious. But once they began investigating the charred remains in detail, they began to rethink the cause, Fire Chief Paul Ciccone said. Advertisement “We systematically eliminated all possible causes,” said the state’s fire marshal, Peter J. Ostroskey. “That led us to this point.” The blaze began in the early morning on Sunday, July 23, and demolished the five-building complex on Cooper Street near the Charles River. The 264 units were scheduled to open next year. Get Fast Forward in your inbox: Forget yesterday's news. Get what you need today in this early-morning email. Citing the ongoing investigation, neither Ciccone nor Ostroskey would shed any light on a specific cause or potential motive for settin...

Fire damages apartment building in historic Monte Vista

SAN ANTONIO - Fire investigators are looking into what caused an old apartment complex to burst into flames Monday afternoon . It happened at the Magnolia Arms apartment building in the 100 block of Magnolia in the Monte Vista Historic District just north of downtown. San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said the fire broke out in a unit on the first floor, but spread quickly to the second floor and attic. "It did extend up into the attic," Hood said. "So, we had to chase it. These older apartments and homes, (it's) a lot of manual labor because they are built so doggone good so, the fire travels and we're just trying to chase it and figure it out." Hood said they initially responded with a large number of units because Magnolia Arms is an old apartment complex, but he said they also had a large response because of the heat. "The reason we called a second alarm is because of the intense heat," said Hood. "As far as rehabbing our firefighte...

Hunting for apartments in Missoula remains difficult | Local

When Matt Metzger and Carly Wingert showed up to view apartments early Friday afternoon at a complex on the south end of town, the property management office was closed. Another tenant pointed them to the mailbox with applications they could take and fill out. But it was empty. So they were off to make more calls. They'd already looked at a couple of places, including one that still was under renovation. "The struggle is real," Wingert said, still cheerful nonetheless. "It's not easy at all," Metzger said. After looking at just a handful of units, they were already talking about how to adjust their budget and possibly work overtime to afford a suitable home.  Wingert and Metzger plan to finish their degrees at the University of Montana — he's studying wildlife biology and she's interested in literature and the environment. They're among a slew of students looking for housing around the same time. Despite all the construction that's been ...
