Arlington mother still dealing with issues after apartment floods for the third time

Image
An Arlington woman said her apartment has flooded three times and her apartment office hasn 't done anything about it. Photo: FCN file video . JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Nearly a month ago, the carpets of an Arlington apartment were soaked, moldy and smelly after a heavy rain in Jacksonville. The carpets have since dried, but the mold and strong mildew smell remain . The mother of a 2-year-old little boy who lives there said management has not done enough to remedy the situation, making her and her child practically homeless . Letisha Murrell said she's frustrated and running out of money. "It's the same way it was three weeks ago," Murrell said. In July, Murrell called First Coast News for help after her first floor unit at Pier 5350 in Arlington had flooded for the third time in the two years she's lived there. Murrell said the complex promised to fix the problems quickly. "They were supposed to move the furniture out, pull all the carpet up, redo the carpet...

Forget coffee and avocado toast — most people blow nearly 40% of their money in the same place

Image
caption Giving up coffee isn’t the key to retiring early. source Tristan Fewings / Getty There’s one area where almost everyone in the US overspends, and – spoiler alert – it isn’t coffee. It’s not avocado toast either, for that matter. The biggest chunk of the average American’s budget goes toward housing, which accounts for about 37% of take-home pay. Many people spend even more. In some circumstances, spending a lot on rent or a mortgage is unavoidable. But in many cases, making a few sacrifices on housing expenses today could lead to significant savings – and a far more comfortable future. Take, for example, Grant Sabatier, a 30-something self-made millionaire who founded the finance blog Millennial Money . He was able to save about $25,000 in two years by cutting back on housing, as well as transportation and dining expenses. “At the end of the day it comes down to a personal choice, but I was happy moving to a smaller apartment, moving closer to my office, and eating out le...

Nebraska man holds ‘get a job’ sign near pandhandlers

Image
(Photo: KETV)OMAHA, NE (KETV) — Dueling signs dot the intersection of Saddle Creek Road and Cuming Street in Omaha, Nebraska. The busy crossing is a popular place for panhandlers, but there’s a new face on one of the corners. Charles Logan has taken to holding a poster board with the words “Get a job. Get a job.” “If you want money, go get a job and work for it,” Logan said, as cars raced by Tuesday afternoon.” Logan, who said he is retired from the military, explained he carries the sign in his car. When he see panhandlers around town, he often stops to stand on the corner with them. His motivation: seeing his own son panhandling. “That’s really what hurt me. Because I know that he didn’t have to do that. And a lot of people out here don’t have to do it,” Logan said. Though some of the panhandlers argued it’s not so simple. “He has a sign that says, ‘get a job’, but he doesn’t know people’s struggles,” Charles Smith, one of the panhandlers said. Sm...

10 Ways to Practice Self Love on a College Student's Budget

Even college students need to regularly practice self-love. While there are countless articles about "treating yo’self" and practicing some self-love, it might seem unattainable to actually do it. Especially when many articles are sponsored by products that college students could only wish to afford (one day, though). After all, the whole point of self-love is to treat yourself to the relaxation and care that it deserves. It wouldn’t be very soothing if you spent your monthly budget on one pedicure. Sure, the pedicure itself would be nice, but you’d immediately regret it, because you’d be stressing out about how to afford your other monthly expenditures. Although it might seems as though college students are only limited to treating themselves to two ramen noodles packets (instead of one), there are many creative ways they can shower themselves with love. Here are 10 ways to practice self-love on a college student's budget. 1. Make yourself some coffee While you cou...

Get to know the Patti Cake$ star

Comedic dynamo (and Amy Schumer squad member ) Bridget Everett has made her name as the go-to gal for raunchy laughs. Anyone who’s seen footage of her live performances — or her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon   — knows that she is, quite simply, a force. An Amazonian beauty with a powerhouse set of pipes and a penchant for chardonnay, the woman known as the Cabaret Hurricane runs around the room motorboating and mounting audience members , whether they like it or not. (They usually like it.) The word confident might spring to mind, though it feels like a little sissy of an adjective given the off-the- wall artistic cataclysm that is a Bridget Everett show .  But when it came to playing the hard-living, not-always- nice Barb Dombrowski in the drama Patti Cake$ — about a young woman trying to escape her dead-end New Jersey town by becoming a rap star — Everett felt wobbly. We caught up with her on a rare day off. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I spoke to [ Patti ...

Portugal Dominated Angola for Centuries. Now the Roles Are Reversed.

Image
“And suddenly they were able to help us and to buy things that we cannot buy,” he said. “It was like a housekeeper buying your house. That is awkward.” The conditions in both countries created a perfect match: As Portugal reeled from a financial crisis a few years ago, Angolans were enjoying an oil boom that provided enormous opportunities for self-enrichment by the elite, particularly the president’s family and inner circle. Angola is often listed as one of the world’s most corrupt nations. And Portugal has been singled out for its laxness in reining in money laundering and bribery, particularly in its dealings with Angolans, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the research and policy organization of the world’s richest countries. “In Angola, they call Portugal the laundromat,” said Ana Gomes, a Portuguese lawmaker in the European Parliament and a member of Portugal’s governing Socialist Party . “It’s because it is.” But the two nations’ relationsh...
