In the Gig Economy, Coworking Spaces Are Everywhere—What Is It Like to Work in One? - Features

Image
The Riveter: This one was my favorite. Steve Korn S eattle has the fourth-fastest- growing freelance economy in the country, which explains why there are almost as many coworking spaces opening up as luxury apartment buildings . Since I'll never be able to afford a luxury apartment , I thought maybe I can at least work at a place where the sink actually drains and the coffee is always fresh. So I checked out some coworking spaces and brought my laptop with me. I didn't tell them I was coming. I wanted to see what these places were like inside, without any PR hoopla. Clearly, we are living in the age of the remote worker. By 2020, 40 percent of the US workforce will be freelancers, temps, independent contractors, or "solopreneurs," according to a 2010 study by Intuit. According to the 2017 Global Coworking Survey , nearly 1. 2 million people worldwide will have tried coworking by the end of next year, and around 14, 000 coworking spaces will be in operation. How Churches and Service Clubs Can Ease Housing Crunch

Image
“It’s kind of in my bloodline,” said Jack Barr. Contests, events & more from Tyee and select partners His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all Freemasons. Barr followed in their footsteps, and is the president of the Vancouver Masonic Centre Association today . As political scientist Robert Putnam noted in his famous work Bowling Alone , community groups like the Freemasons have been declining for the last few decades. Religious groups like the Roman Catholic Knights of Columbus, military groups like Legions, service clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis, even youth scouting groups and bowling leagues have seen participation plummet. Some longtime churches have also seen congregations shrink dramatically . Barr says freemasonry’s most recent heyday was the late-1960s and early-1970s. But the organizations are still around, and many own property. A number of groups are facing the question of what to do with their land and buildings as needs change, along with their abili...

| Share | Share | Share | Share Aug. 15--A proposed $57 million development would convert part of the MBTA's Mattapan Station parking lot into a mixed- income apartment building with 135 units and 10,000 square feet of commercial/retail space. Preservation of Affordable Housing Inc. and Nuestra Comunidad Development Corp . filed a letter of intent with the Boston Planning & Development Agency to build on the 2.57- acre River Street site in Mattapan Square , which borders Milton and Hyde Park, and is bound by Blue Hill Avenue and the newly restored Neponset River Greenway . "What makes this site so unique is the new Neponset River Greenway , which is something our development plans are highlighting and really seeing as a major amenity," said Julie Creamer, POAH's vice president of real estate development . "We're creating some really meaningful pathways to the greenway, as well as creating about a 2,000-square- foot community space which will abu...

City Plan to Build 1K Apts. in LIC Flood Zone 'Irresponsible,' Critics Say - Long Island City - New York

Long Island City waterfront ." /> The project will bring 1,000 apartments, commercial space and a new school to the Long Island City waterfront . View Full Caption NYCEDC HUNTERS POINT — Critics of the city's plan to build a school, offices and 1,000 apartments on the Long Island City waterfront called it "irresponsible" to develop the site because it's located in a hurricane evacuation zone that's prone to flooding during storms. Advocates said they would rather see the two city-owned parcels — located next to the East River at the end of 44th Drive — converted to public parkland, with plantings, oyster beds and other green infrastructure to help make the area more resistant to floods.  "We think continuing to build in a flood plain is irresponsible," said Diane Hendry, a member of the LIC Coalition, an advocacy group that launched a petition last week opposing the city's plans. "The land is a natural wetlands. It should be preserv...

You Can Call it Van Ness or Forest Hills

Image
Whether you call it Van Ness or Forest Hills , the area is a desirable destination in the DC area. Found in the northwest quadrant, the residential neighborhood gains one of its namesakes from its close proximity to the Van Ness campus of UDC and from the nearby Van Ness Metro station . This suburban neighborhood is also home, however, to large sprawling homes and apartment complexes, with some dating back to the early 1920s and others of new construction. While large co-ops, condos and rental buildings stand in the area, so do some newer, luxury apartments. With that comes a range of home prices, with some even topping the multi- million dollar range , displaying architecture of varying styles and decades. You’ll also find several rentals in the area, with prices dependent on the building and location. Recently, community leaders have also focused on the community itself, not only attracting new businesses to the area but keeping the needs of the community in check. Along with t...
