Historic preservationists are keeping a watchful eye on three brick multi- level buildings that stand in the shadow of the Little Caesars Arena after getting word last week that the Ilitch family- owned Olympia Development had planned to demolish them without permission. The company’s contractors had previously obtained demolition permits for the more than hundred-year-old buildings, but according to the city's buildings department, the permits are frozen as the city studies whether the buildings are eligible for historic designation. Alarm bells first went off Tuesday when workers in neon shirts and hard hats showed up outside the more than hundred-year-old buildings at Cass Avenue and Henry Street, near Woodward and I-75. With them was a truck printed with the Homrich logo— a company known for its work in demolition and remediation. The activity sparked swif...

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Administrators at Michigan State University are expecting 8,000 first-year students to arrive on campus next week.  The class of 2021 is considered one of the largest in the school's history. Overall, MSU received 36 ,000 applications from prospective students, but only 8,000 were admitted. They will move onto campus Monday, with classes scheduled to begin Wednesday.  Nearly 16,000 students will be living on the East Lansing campus this academic year in residence halls and on- campus apartments . As in past years, a number of volunteers will be pitching in to help with move in, including other students, faculty, staff, alumni and community volunteers, according to a news released from the university.  More than 72 percent of new students are from Michigan, which the university said reflects its long- standing land grant tradition . The Los Angeles Dodgers recorded their 90th victory Aug . 24, the fastest any Dodger club has reached that important milestone. If they achieve the projected 116 wins in their 162- game regular season , they’ll go down as one of the greatest baseball teams of all time. Of course, I have two adult children who weren’t alive the last time the Dodgers were even in a World Series so anything short of a ring this time is, well, a loss. This has been a truly magical season, which makes it all the more disappointing that the Dodgers’ covetous ownership continues to snub its fans with its cockamamie cable TV contract scheme . With all these exciting, charismatic, budding and veteran all-stars and their unbelievable exploits, it’s hard to understand why they would willingly write off a generation of new fans. Frankrupt McCourt would approve. It is said that greed is good. The Dodgers are both, and what an unfortunate missed opportunity this year has been. Meanwhile, I told you in my last co...

Rising rents drive homelessness in Seattle

Image
Each 10 percent increase in Seattle rents leads to 523 more people becoming homeless. Pictured here someone living in one of Nickelsville’s sites. Nickelsville is an encampment run by and for homeless people in Seattle that seeks to provide a safe place for people to stay. In 2015, the homelessness crisis in Seattle was declared by Mayor Ed Murray to have reached a “state of emergency” severe enough to prompt him to request support from the federal government. Two years later, homelessness in the Emerald City is still on the rise as rents across the city and nearby towns continue to soar. The cost of rent in Seattle and the surrounding King County area has exploded in recent years. While luxury condominiums have never been more plentiful, affordable housing that is accessible to working people is difficult to find. According to data compiled by the real estate website Zillow , the average cost of renting a home in King County has risen approximately $800 since September of 2012....

Johnson Chrome was a notorious big spender with a taste for bottle service , bespoke suits and $10,000 shoes. The source of his wealth? A sophisticated identity theft scheme that may have conned Torontonians out of millions. The untold story of the city’s most wanted fraudster Photographs: All portraits via Facebook; background by iStock T he fraudster who called himself Johnson Chrome liked to sit on a bench at the intersection of Hazelton and Yorkville, smoking a Montecristo Edmundo robusto and talking about fashion, cars and cigars to anyone who’d listen. He was charming and handsome, with a neatly trimmed beard , a shaved head and perfect teeth. The perch placed him at the centre of the rarefied universe he’d come to inhabit. His condo, in the former Four Seasons hotel, was steps to the west, and he parked his black Jaguar at the Hazelton Hotel opposite . His gym, the sleek Equinox, was a minute’s walk northwest; his preferred cigar shop , La Casa del Habano , was to the sout...
