ORANGE — As Chapman University helps students move in this week, it will be housing 37 percent of its undergraduates on campus, while many more will spread out into rented rooms and houses in nearby Old Towne Orange neighborhoods . Within four years, the university expects to have 48 percent of its students living in dorms, one project away from meeting Chapman President Daniele Struppa ’s commitment to the community to get half of its students into campus-controlled housing and out of neighborhoods. For years, college life and neighborhood serenity haven ’t always mixed. The volume of residents’ complaints growing until Chapman paused expansion plans in 2015 to first address the friction. This incoming class of students at UConn's main campus is slightly smaller than last year's — 3,650 compared to 3,800 — but contains a record number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians and a higher percentage of students in the top 10 percent of their class. The class has a slightly lower percentage of minority students — down about one percentage point to 35.1 percent compared to last year's 36.3 percent — and more international students, up from 373 students to 510. USC's Board of Trustees approved a $ 460 million construction project on Friday that will bring eight new residence halls to south campus by 2024. The Campus Village project , originally proposed in 2015, will replace the existing Bates Towers , Cliff Apartments and Carolina Gardens housing facilities and construct new buildings on the sites of the Bates and Benson building parking lots . As the project was developed through a public-private partnership with Memphis- based collegiate property developer EdR , USC will not have to pay to build or operate any part of the Campus Village development . In addition, USC will not become liable for any debt related to the project. In all, the three-phase project will bring 3,750 beds to south campus over the next seven years. STORRS, CT — Massive construction projects on the main University of Connecticut campus mean students returning to campus this week will be facing a move-in weekend like never before. Some students who arranged early move -in are already on campus, but the bulk of the 12,400 who live in Storrs residence halls will be descending on the campus beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. Freshmen are up first Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. The biggest piece of advice for far from administrators for Friday has been to go old school while driving to the new school. That means plugging the dorm addresses into GPS units is essentially useless because of North Campus closures and traffic restrictions along North Eagleville Road from Route 195 and its side streets . As Towson University students prepare to head back to campus this week, university officials say complaints of loud, unruly gatherings near the campus are down by as much as 50 percent in some neighborhoods since the Baltimore County Council passed an ordinance to deter problem behavior . After numerous neighborhood complaints of public urination, property damage and excessive noise in residential neighborhoods, the council passed the Social Host–Unruly Social Gatherings ordinance in January 2016 to target problem landlords and renters through their pocketbooks. The two-year pilot, which was introduced by County Councilman David Marks , will expire in January. With a full school year having passed since the enactment of the ordinance, neighbors, Towson University officials and county police officials say it is working to curb problem behavior . EAST LANSING, Mich. - Administrators at Michigan State University are expecting 8,000 first-year students to arrive on campus next week.  The class of 2021 is considered one of the largest in the school's history. Overall, MSU received 36 ,000 applications from prospective students, but only 8,000 were admitted. They will move onto campus Monday, with classes scheduled to begin Wednesday.  Nearly 16,000 students will be living on the East Lansing campus this academic year in residence halls and on- campus apartments . As in past years, a number of volunteers will be pitching in to help with move in, including other students, faculty, staff, alumni and community volunteers, according to a news released from the university.  More than 72 percent of new students are from Michigan, which the university said reflects its long- standing land grant tradition . A five-year-old child was stabbed to death in a domestic violence incident on the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus , officials said. The child's parents were also injured in the incident, which happened around 11.45pm Saturday and was reported to authorities around 12.12am Sunday, The Herald-Sun reported. When Matt Metzger and Carly Wingert showed up to view apartments early Friday afternoon at a complex on the south end of town, the property management office was closed. Another tenant pointed them to the mailbox with applications they could take and fill out. But it was empty. So they were off to make more calls. They'd already looked at a couple of places, including one that still was under renovation. "The struggle is real," Wingert said, still cheerful nonetheless. "It's not easy at all," Metzger said.
