8 Takeaways on Airbnb's Road to an IPO – Skift

Earlier this month, Skift published a comprehensive look at Airbnb’s Road to an IPO, or initial public offering on the stock market. While the story primarily focused on all of the many things the company is doing (and needs to do) as it pursues that inevitable IPO, it wasn’t necessarily a story about what it takes for a company like Airbnb to go public. Indeed, what Airbnb is doing right now in its efforts to become a “super brand of travel,” or a new breed of online travel agency (OTA), speaks to the very future of travel. Already, we’ve seen the company expand into tours and activities with the November launch of its Trips business, adding to its already robust 4-million-listing- strong Homes business . CEO Brian Chesky has also hinted the company may soon enter the flights sector as well. It’s a glimpse of what we as travelers can expect to see and to experience in the next few years as platforms like Airbnb continue to evolve and to attempt to solve the many pain points we st...

Lehman estate could scupper Archstone deal

December 4, 2011 by: Helen Thomas in New York The estate of bankrupt Lehman Brothers believes that Archstone – the apartment company that Bank of America and Barclays have agreed to sell part of their stakes in – is worth $1bn more in equity value than the price at which the two banks have struck their deal, people familiar with the matter said. The estate is considering mounting a matching bid to derail the banks’ deal with Equity Residential , the real estate company headed by Chicago mogul Sam Zell . EQR said late on Friday that it had agreed to pay $1.325bn in cash for a 26.5 per cent stake in Archstone, which was taken private at the height of the property boom. The deal values it at about $ 16bn including debt . However, the agreement with EQR triggers a right of first refusal for the estate of the investment bank, which filed for bankruptcy in 2008, to buy the stake. People familiar with the matter said that should Lehman exercise its right to match the offer, the banks hav...

High-end rentals, dog park included, going up near Oakbrook Terrace

A Northfield-based company has broken ground on a project that will bring 315 high-end apartments to a stalled mixed-use development near Oakbrook Terrace. Interforum Holdings will start construction of its Lakeside Village of Oak Brook luxury apartments as soon as the weather permits. The 500,000-square-foot, four-story building will be on roughly 6 acres along Royce Boulevard . "We went into the area to develop a project because we see a serious lack of luxury, Class A rental communities in the area," said Alex Zdanov, CEO of Interforum Holdings. "A current trend right now is for people to rent." Zdanov said Lakeside Village will provide a rental option for executives and other professionals working in Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace and other nearby communities. The apartment building will be in the Oak Brook Lakes development , which has 82 undeveloped acres off Butterfield Road, just east of where it splits from 22nd Street. Offic...

Lehman to sell apartment owner Archstone for $6.5 billion

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc agreed to sell property group Archstone to two real estate investment trusts for about $6.5 billion, taking advantage of a strong market for apartments and marking an end to a 2007 gamble that helped push the investment bank into bankruptcy. The buyers, Equity Residential ( EQR.N ) and AvalonBay Communities Inc ( AVB.N ), will split the assets 60-40 and will also take on Archstone's debt, for a total transaction value of $16 billion. Lehman collapsed at the height of the financial crisis in 2008, in part because of soured real estate bets , including the $23. 7 billion leveraged buyout of Archstone. The firm filed for bankruptcy and has been liquidating assets to pay back creditors , who are still owed more than $30 billion. Archstone, one of the largest owners of U.S. apartments, has a large portfolio of properties in metropolitan areas, where apartment buildings have been pricey and difficult to come by. The acquisition would...
