Apartment fire Monday was intentionally set

Fire investigators said that a Monday night fire at a Vancouver apartment building was unrelated to a fire at the same complex earlier this month. Vancouver firefighters were sent to the Madison Park Apartments , 12901 N.E. 28th St., just before 8 p.m. Monday and crews arrived to find flames coming from a second-story window. Within about five minutes, firefighters snaked a hose to the apartment and knocked down the blaze, which was burning in a single room. Investigators have since determined that the fire, which caused an estimated $17,500 in damage to structure and contents, was intentionally set , Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said. She wouldn’t divulge information about how the fire started so as to not compromise the investigation. No arrests have been made, but investigators are actively pursuing leads , Scarpelli said. Firefighters and fire investigators were at the property less than two weeks prior for a two-alarm fire that displaced 17 people in nine apartmen...

Residents gather belongings after Three Oaks apartment fire

Image
THREE OAKS, Mich. (WNDU) - UPDATE People who escaped an apartment fire in Three Oaks are going back to save any belongings they can carry. 14 families had to evacuate as Hidden Harbor Villas caught fire early Saturday morning . A Michigan State Police fire investigator says the fire started in a vacant apartment on the second floor near the utility closet but he says it's not suspicious and he doesn't believe it was arson. That's not much comfort to the families, only two of whom had renters insurance. Melissa Lawson, one of those affected, said, "We were running to just get out the door. She had some clothes in the diaper bag, but she was just in her diaper and we grabbed a blanket. Nobody had shoes, no one. " Peter Trigg, another person affected, said, "Honestly, I'm not worried about what I can save. I thought everything was a loss, and everything I can find is just a blessing. It's absolutely a blessing." Neighbors say t...

A top- floor apartment fire Monday afternoon in Elkridge ended after 65 firefighters and paramedics from Howard, Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes. First responders were called to the 6200 block of Greenfield Road around noon, Howard fire officials said, where they found flames engulfing a fourth-floor balcony at the Penniman Park apartments . The fire extended from the apartment's exterior into its interior and roof, but was under control by 12:15 p.m. Other apartments were affected by residual smoke; however, fire officials said residents evacuated the building before they arrived. No resident or firefighter injuries were reported. Fire officials said the sprinkler head between the balcony and apartment's living area was activated and limited the damage. Howard County fire department 's Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the origin and cause of Monday's fire.

Massive College Park apartment fire possibly accidental

Image
COLLEGE PARK, MD (WUSA9) - A huge fire that caused close to $40 million worth of damage to a College Park apartment building might have been an accident, according to officials. A spokesperson with the Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department said they are leaning toward the cause of the Fuse 47 fire as being accidental. However, he added there is still more investigating that is needed before an exact cause can be determined. Right now, the investigation has to wait for all of the fire to be put out inside the structure before anyone can safely go inside. RELATED:  Construction method questioned after massive College Park fire University of Maryland Junior Nicholas Bentley had signed a lease to move into the apartment building earlier this year. He told WUSA9 he was informed by Fuse 47 that he would receive his application fee and deposit fund back . "I would love to stay in the College Park area and this apartment complex represented a good way to do that," ...

Fire damages apartment building in historic Monte Vista

SAN ANTONIO - Fire investigators are looking into what caused an old apartment complex to burst into flames Monday afternoon . It happened at the Magnolia Arms apartment building in the 100 block of Magnolia in the Monte Vista Historic District just north of downtown. San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said the fire broke out in a unit on the first floor, but spread quickly to the second floor and attic. "It did extend up into the attic," Hood said. "So, we had to chase it. These older apartments and homes, (it's) a lot of manual labor because they are built so doggone good so, the fire travels and we're just trying to chase it and figure it out." Hood said they initially responded with a large number of units because Magnolia Arms is an old apartment complex, but he said they also had a large response because of the heat. "The reason we called a second alarm is because of the intense heat," said Hood. "As far as rehabbing our firefighte...

Neighbor breaks window of Lower East Side apartment where Confederate flag is hanging

NEW YORK — The Confederate flags had been in a Manhattan apartment window for over a year. And then, in a matter of days last week, they were met with hurled rocks, a punched-out window, a tarp hung over them and legal action. By Monday, the lighted flags were no more to be found in the seventh-floor windows in the East Village neighborhood , where the Confederate symbol had been displayed alongside an Israeli flag and a colonial-era American one. They’d attracted new attention after an Aug. 12 white nationalist rally to preserve a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, spiraled into violence that left a counter-protester dead and stirred debate over where or whether Confederate statues and symbols belong in 21st-century America. A man lobbed rocks at the building last week while he and others yelled for the Confederate flags to be taken down, according to video made by a bystander and posted on local news site DNAInfo . Another man, Darren Keen, put a fist through one of ...

Woodhollow Apartments too risky to investigate yet

After surveying the damage at the Woodhollow Apartments on Tuesday, Fire Chief Charles Hood said it was too risky for arson investigators to enter the one building that was reduced to rubble. But Hood said they have spoken to witnesses, so he hopes that will lead to what started the three-alarm fire. Hood said Monday's dangerously high winds "could have easily burned up the entire block." "Fighting a wind-fed fire like that is like fighting a blow torch," Hood said. However, Hood credited the more than 100 firefighters for containing the fire to a single building with 36 units, of which only three were unoccupied. "It's a testament to the training and the commitment of the firefighters," Hood said. "We're extremely proud of them." He said only one resident was treated for smoke inhalation, but no firefighters were hurt. The chief also said it would have been a far different story if the fire had started in the middle of the night, w...

Sheriff's deputies reported the incident at 9:16 a.m. and said the inmate, 45, climbed over a security railing about 12 feet above the floor below, according to Sheriff Matt Saxton . The inmate was drinking a nontoxic cleaning solution before she let go of the railing and fell backward. Tosha Cummings, a corrections officer, attempted to catch the woman and break her fall and she was knocked back, hitting her head on a table and then the floor. Both women were taken to Bronson Battle Creek for treatment and released. Cummings is expected to return to work in a couple of days, Saxton said. The inmate was returned to the jail and placed on suicide watch. The inmate was arrested Monday on a warrant for failure to appear for a trial. She is charged with a 2015 ass...

Transgender woman murdered outside Atlanta-area apartment complex

A transgender woman was found shot and killed early Monday morning outside of a College Park apartment complex . Atlanta resident TeeTee Dangerfield , 32, was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside of her vehicle at the South Hampton Estates apartment complex on July 31 at about 4:30 a.m., according to the College Park Police Department . Major Lance Patterson told Georgia Voice that College Park Fire Rescue took Dangerfield to Grady Memorial Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Patterson also said her family had been notified. There are no suspects at this time, according to Patterson. “Detectives are out there right now following up on leads that have been coming in since then,” he said. It’s also unclear whether Dangerfield’s murder had something to do with her being transgender. “At this time we don’t have anything that’s telling us that, but we’re not ruling out any possible motive,” Patterson said. The incident occurred just two days after a Midtown rally and ...

Goodbye to the Loop, a Place Where the Constant Has Been Change

Image
click to enlarge I can’t remember exactly when I started at the Riverfront Times , but it was a long time ago — the web site was a .PDF of the paper that was uploaded on Wednesday morning . I can say that I’ve lived or worked (sometimes both) in the Loop since Bill Clinton was in the White House. I've been coming down here for films, books, meals and weird people watching since the late ‘80s, back when gangs of feral kids camped out in the street- level parking lot across from the Tivoli. The stretch of Delmar between the St. Louis Noodle Cafe and the University City Public Library has been my psycho-geographical concept of St. Louis for more than half my life. But now I'm in the process of packing up my office in preparation for a move. This afternoon, the RFT is leaving our home of 21 years on Delmar. By tomorrow, the paper will be based in Downtown West, and so will I, at least during office hours. Goodbye to all that. We’re only the latest business to say that...

Police and Protesters Mobilize for Trump’s Return to His Own Home

Protesters are undeterred, Mr. Quinn said, even though Mr. Trump was known to stay sealed in his tower when he was a private citizen, commuting between his penthouse and his offices on a lower floor and sometimes not leaving the building for days at a time. It seems unlikely that he will spend much time outdoors, given the immense security efforts necessary to protect a sitting president in the middle of Midtown Manhattan. “He might not be able to see us,” said Mr. Quinn, who works in the publishing industry and lives in Jackson Heights, Queens. “But he’ll see us on social media.” Speaking to reporters on Friday at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., where he is spending a 17- day working vacation , Mr. Trump said he had intentionally kept his trips home to a minimum after seeing firsthand how disruptive presidential visits can be to New York. "I think I’m more disruptive than any of them,” he said. The Police Department has estimated that the cost of protecting Mr. Trump when he...

Paulding council discusses changing alleyway | Local News

PAULDING – Changing a one-way alley in the village was the major topic of discussion at the Paulding Village Council meeting on Monday. Councilwoman Barb Rife said that during a recent street committee meeting , Richard Kipp of Branch Christian Fellowship Church asked to change the one-way alley on the northside of his property. The alley currently allows traffic to go east to west, and he wants it to go west to east to accommodate handicapped visitors to the church. A new elevator was installed at the church and visitors must use the alley entrance to access the church that way. Kipp said that the current traffic flow makes it difficult for those with handicaps to exit vehicles. The committee did a walk-through of the alley and found there is one apartment, which uses the alley. To change the alley’s traffic flow the other direction would make it difficult for the resident to turn into the garage. “The committee felt that we should allow the alley to be both dir...

History's Headlines: Dorney Park - WFMZ

Image
History's Headlines: Dorney Park ALLENTOWN, Pa. -  On any given warm summer day , there is a line at Dorney Park . The amusement mecca, whose history goes back over 150 years, can be found full of patrons, some of whom arrive by the busload, to ride on or dive in any one of a number of attractions. Some hail from as far away as New York or Philadelphia. Others are from any one of the local suburbs of Allentown and Bethlehem. Born in an era when beating the heat meant a cool walk in the woods, not an air-conditioned room, Dorney has always had its devoted fans. Some old timers claim it has changed too much and miss the rides of their youth. But in truth, like it has in the past, Dorney reflects the era of which it is in. Always has. The park’s founder, Solomon P. Dorney, was a Pennsylvania German farmer who lived in Cetronia. He acquired the land the park was on from his father. It had been in the family since the 1770s. Now a lot of people of Dorney’s generation were content to ...
