NORFOLK, Va. – Seventeen people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in the 7100 block of Sewells Point Road Friday . The fire was reported at 11:12 a.m. and crews with the Norfolk Fire- Rescue arrived approximately four minutes later. An adult female occupant inside the apartment smelled smoke and self-evacuated along with her five-year-old grandson. She notified neighbors of the fire as she evacuated. Engine Company- 14 reported heavy smoke visible from the second floor of the two- story apartment building . Crews advanced a fire hose inside the building for an interior fire attack and to conduct a primary search of the apartment. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions as they attempted to suppress the fire. A second alarm was called due to the magnitude of the fire and the size of the building. A two- alarm apartment building fire in Browne’s Addition drew dozens of firefighters in the sweltering heat just before noon Friday. The first units to arrive at the Greentree Apartments at 1919 W. Pacific Ave. saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor of the building, said Spokane Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Mark John . A second alarm was immediately called to get more crews to battle the fire. Mike Varne lives in the basement level of the building and said someone was banging on doors to warn residents of the fire. “I was sitting,” he said. “Somebody knocked on my door and said there’s a fire, get the hell out,” Varne said. A Felton woman has become the second victim of a deadly fire that swept the Woodcrest Arms apartment complex June 6 . Jeff Brown, News Editor A second victim of the June 6 fire at Woodcrest Arms apartment complex has died. Christina Lynn Taylor , 33, of Cedar Grove Church Road , Felton, died the afternoon of June 7 while at Crozier Chester Burn Center , Chester, Pa., said Dover Police Capt . Tim Stump. Taylor and her boyfriend had been at the apartments to help a relative move, Stump said. The boyfriend, whose name was not released, was still at the burn center, where he had been taken with life-threatening injuries after the fire. Stump also identified the first victim of the blaze as Jacqueline Wuest, 61. Wuest’s body was found in her third- floor apartment during an initial sweep of the building. The fire was reported at 9:41 p.m. Tuesday in the laundry room at 60 Twin Ave., a 24-apartment building overseen by the Spring Valley Community Development Corp . "Heavy smoke was coming from the front door," Spring Valley Fire Chief Ken Sohlman said. "We contained the fire down in the laundry room. There was smoke damage to the four apartments in that section of the building." Sohlman said Orange & Rockland Utilities cut off power to the building in the wake of the fire. WALTHAM — The massive fire that destroyed a big apartment complex under construction in Waltham in July was caused by arson, investigators said Thursday, with damages estimated at $110 million. Initially, fire officials had said they did not believe the 10-alarm fire was suspicious. But once they began investigating the charred remains in detail, they began to rethink the cause, Fire Chief Paul Ciccone said. RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- Crews battled a five-alarm fire at an abandoned apartment building in Riverside on Sunday. The fire broke out in a second- story apartment at the Monte Vista Terrace apartments , located in the 2400 block of Market Street around 4:30 p.m., fire officials said. The unoccupied building is listed as a senior living facility . When firefighters first arrived, they say they attempted to fight the flames from the inside, but were quickly forced to evacuate as the fire grew. The fire was upgraded from a four-alarm fire to a five alarm fire in the 9 p.m. hour. By 11 p.m., crews had the flames under control. They were expected to remain on scene through the night. SAN ANTONIO - Fire investigators are looking into what caused an old apartment complex to burst into flames Monday afternoon . It happened at the Magnolia Arms apartment building in the 100 block of Magnolia in the Monte Vista Historic District just north of downtown. San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said the fire broke out in a unit on the first floor, but spread quickly to the second floor and attic. "It did extend up into the attic," Hood said. "So, we had to chase it. These older apartments and homes, (it's) a lot of manual labor because they are built so doggone good so, the fire travels and we're just trying to chase it and figure it out." Fire investigators said that a Monday night fire at a Vancouver apartment building was unrelated to a fire at the same complex earlier this month. Vancouver firefighters were sent to the Madison Park Apartments , 12901 N.E. 28th St., just before 8 p.m. Monday and crews arrived to find flames coming from a second-story window. Within about five minutes, firefighters snaked a hose to the apartment and knocked down the blaze, which was burning in a single room. Investigators have since determined that the fire, which caused an estimated $17,500 in damage to structure and contents, was intentionally set , Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said. She wouldn’t divulge information about how the fire started so as to not compromise the investigation. No arrests have been made, but investigators are actively pursuing leads , Scarpelli said. The first call for help went out just after 8:30 a.m., officials said, and firefighters responded to the fire, at Hunters Glen Apartments , on the 3000 block of Route 130. DALLAS- A burning SUV caused a three- story apartment building to catch flames in far North Dallas. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call at the McCallum Meadows Apartments finding a burning SUV under a section of covered parking. Flames were able to make it to the attic of the three- story apartment building by way of a tree located in front of it. Firefighters were able to to extinguish the three-alarm fire by deploying hand-lines, limiting most of the damage to the building. With a total of 24 units in the building, one sustained a majority of the damage with a handful of others having various degrees of smoke and water damage. There were no reported resident injuries , but two firefighters are being evaluated for heat exhaustion. Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental in nature.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park firefighters battled a two- alarm apartment fire near 119th Street and Switzer Road. Firefighters were called to the Highland Ridge Apartments in the 11800 block of Perry Street just before 11 a.m. Friday. Four people were taken to the hospital after an apartment fire on the east side of Colorado Springs. The fire broke out shortly after 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Devonshire Square Apartments on Uintah, near Circle. At least one person had to be rescued from the building. Firefighters searched the buildings for other people who might be trapped. Four people were taken to the hospital. Another five were treated at the scene. Firefighters say two units are a complete loss. The Red Cross is assisting people who will be displaced. A witness who lives in the building told 11 News her fire alarm never went off. She says by the time she realized what was going on, the hallway was filled with smoke. The fire chief says at this point he can't confirm whether or not the fire alarms were working. After surveying the damage at the Woodhollow Apartments on Tuesday, Fire Chief Charles Hood said it was too risky for arson investigators to enter the one building that was reduced to rubble. But Hood said they have spoken to witnesses, so he hopes that will lead to what started the three-alarm fire. Hood said Monday's dangerously high winds "could have easily burned up the entire block." "Fighting a wind-fed fire like that is like fighting a blow torch," Hood said. CHAPEL HILL, NC (WTVD) — UNC Police are investigating after a domestic- violence incident left a 5-year-old boy dead and two adults with injuries Sunday at UNC’S Baity Hill family housing community . On Monday, authorities named the boy’s mother, 34-year-old Ebony Oluwasegva , as a suspect in the case. Charges have not been filed but are pending. They include murder and non-negligent manslaughter and attempted murder and non-negligent manslaughter. The incident report lists Victor Oluwasegva , 32, as another person involved in the incident. The violent episode happened in a single- family UNC housing residence Sunday about 12:10 a.m. Police said a knife was used in the attack. The two people injured were the parents of the child, UNC Police said. The child’s father was described as a UNC graduate student .
