Lake Wylie SC residents mull runoff woes

Fish, most of them the length of an outstretched hand outstretched , seem to know Tea Hoffmann. They form a school at the sound of footsteps on her dock. They wait in the shallows for morsels of cereal or bread. And shallower and shallower they are. “I’m all for people selling their property, making money and all of that,” said Hoffmann, one of six homeowners with docks on a small cove off Mill Creek. “I do not want them just clearing everything and making this cove fill up with dirt.” Hoffmann moved to the area five years ago, but she hadn’t seen anything like what she did Monday. Rain fell, and water began rushing from a construction site at the head of the cove. Only it wasn’t just water. Hoffmann photographed and videoed muddy water pouring into the lake. “That’s the first day that it happened,” Hoffmann said. “It even stained the rocks, it was so bad.” Apartments have been under construction just beside Senator Road for a few months. When it rains, water runs into the lake. But...

Waltham apartment complex fire was arson

Image
WALTHAM — The massive fire that destroyed a big apartment complex under construction in Waltham in July was caused by arson, investigators said Thursday, with damages estimated at $110 million. Ostroskey. “That led us to this point.” The blaze began in the early morning on Sunday, July 23, and demolished the five-building complex on Cooper Street near the Charles River. The 264 units were scheduled to open next year. Get Fast Forward in your inbox: Forget yesterday's news. Get what you need today in this early-morning email. New CHS Mandarin Teacher Niu Xiuqing tours South Orange and Maplewood. Photo by Joy Yagid Yesterday, I had the honor and pleasure of showing Maplewood and South Orange to Columbia High School ’s new Mandarin Language teacher , Niu Xiuqing. I arrived at her host family’s home in South Orange, Thursday morning and asked what she’d like to see. Xiuqing said she’d like to South Mountain Reservation and whatever else I thought she’d like. So, for two hours, that’s what we did. Our first stop was the reservation. We went to the lookout on the loop and got out. The trees have all but obscured the view, but she was excited to see a small bit of the city. Xiuqing, who is from Beijing, loved the forest and mentioned how lucky we were to have such a beautiful, peaceful space so close to us. As we drove the loop, I pointed the sculpture park, wildflower garden, and hiking paths to her. Next we went into South Orange and stopped first at the train station. Xiuqing asked if we had to show ID to bu...
