Rock Hill SC families grateful for affordable housing

Evelyn Gaston was 9 years old in 1971, when she lived with her mother and grandmother at 18 Wright St. in Rock Hill. Over the years, she raised her daughter in that home. And her daughter had her first child there. Life got away from Gaston soon after. She was unable to pay for the home, which led to it being demolished around 15 years ago. Then, she says, “ God put special people ” in her path. After learning recently that a new home was being built in that same spot, she went to her friends in city government. “After that, I didn’t have to do much,” said Gaston. “ People jumped right on in to help me, everybody stepped in to make sure I would get back on that property.” Gaston was among four people who spoke Thursday about how the Housing Development Corporation of Rock Hill (HDCRH) changed their lives for the better. The affordable housing organization held its annual luncheon and meeting at Manchester Meadows, with guests including Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols and members of t...

DEVELOPMENT Apartment tower in Bay Village wins approval An apartment tower in Boston’s Bay Village neighborhood cleared a key hurdle this week when it was approved by the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals. Despite concern from some residents that the 199-foot building was out of scale with the low- slung brick neighborhood behind it, ZBA members voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the project. Transom Development wants to put 133 apartments on what’s now a surface parking lot and empty lot alongside the Revere Hotel. They hope to start construction in spring of 2018. — TIM LOGAN TRANSPORTATION Peter Pan reaches settlement in disabilities discrimination case A Massachusetts bus company accused of discriminating against passengers with disabilities has reached a settlement with federal prosecutors that resolves the allegations. Hanging Out | Westword

Three of the four men charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting the girl are also behind bars. The men are from Honduras, immigrants who found a home at the Heatherwood Apartments. The complex, near Peoria and Colfax in Aurora, is a racial melting pot , one that came to a boil on August 7, when a girl trying to leap to womanhood in a single summer got a very adult lesson. The violence bred more violence -- and more victims. News accounts the next day reported that a seventy-person mob had delivered street justice to one of the accused rapists. Although the reports weren't quite right -- nothing in this saga is -- street justice may be the only justice here. Anna grew up in the neighborhood and has a huge family of siblings and half-siblings. Anna has another daughter who was also taken away by Social Services when Anna went to prison. The girls have a baby brother, too, a child Anna gave birth to after she got out of prison two years ago. That baby has a different father w...

Portlanders hoping to win big as Powerball jumps to $700-million - KPTV

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - After Saturday's Powerball failed to draw a lucky winner, the jackpot jumped to a whopping $700-million, which is the second largest jackpot in the game's history. With so much money on the line, the game is getting intense. "People are spending $40, $100 at a time on it. It's pretty crazy," said Erin Hardigree, assistant manager at Peterson's on Morrison. Between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Peterson's on Morrison sold almost $900 worth of tickets. FOX 12 spoke with a few people who are hoping they can take that money and turn their dreams into a reality. "An apartment downtown, a vacation home somewhere in Spain," said Octavio. "I would share with my family. Pay off some debts," said Jeremiah. There have been 21 straight drawings without a winner, and the odds of winning the Powerball are one in 292 million. At Nob Hill Bar and Grill in northwest Portland, customer Jerry Newsum thinks his ticket is golden. "...

The Summer of Love Turns 50

San Francisco is celebrating the Summer of Love’s 50th anniversary. Most of the celebrants are probably dead and buried by now, especially its high priests like Allen Ginsburg who passed into Eternity in the dingy East Village , Timothy Leary, Jerry Garcia, Emmet Grogan of the Diggers (remember them). In truth, there hasn’t been much of a to-do about the historic occasion. Today’s “with it” residents of the Bay Area live in the moment. Vintage refers to their last but one smart phone; antique is their pre-updated software from Microsoft. The “Summer Of Love” – if they can recognize the name at all – belongs to the Neolithic Age or whenever it was that the skies were filled with flying dinosaurs instead of Amazon delivery drones . Only the De Young Museum has done its civic duty in bowing to the past. A mile away from the Haight-Ashby, they have organized a nostalgic exhibition that features the vivid psychedelic posters from Bill Graham’s Fillmore Ballroom concerts and the accoutre...
