UConn Move-In Weekend: Forget the GPS, Watch the Signs

STORRS, CT — Massive construction projects on the main University of Connecticut campus mean students returning to campus this week will be facing a move-in weekend like never before. Some students who arranged early move -in are already on campus, but the bulk of the 12,400 who live in Storrs residence halls will be descending on the campus beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. Freshmen are up first Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. The biggest piece of advice for far from administrators for Friday has been to go old school while driving to the new school. That means plugging the dorm addresses into GPS units is essentially useless because of North Campus closures and traffic restrictions along North Eagleville Road from Route 195 and its side streets . Movers should also note that all traffic is one-way on Alumni Drive between Hillside Road and Hilltop Apartments this week. "The best thing to do is to watch the signs as you start to approach the ...

The future of mobility being planned for SW Atlanta’s Campbellton Road

Image
By David Pendered Atlanta’s first transportation corridor of the future is to be established in Southwest Atlanta along Campbellton Road by the city and MARTA. Naturally, a computer and the internet of things are at the heart of the effort. MARTA has increased the frequency of buses based out of the Oakland City Station to serve Campbellton Road , a corridor with many transit-dependent riders. Credit: David Pendered Futuristic traffic signals , now slated for installation, have the capacity to coordinate competing mobility demands of vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians, according to Faye DiMassimo, general manager of the Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program and the city’s sales-tax-funded projects. These traffic signals already are being installed along North Avenue. City officials plan to cut the ribbon Sept. 16 on this “ smart corridor ” during an event that’s to include a demonstration of autonomous vehicles. The North Avenue project , a pilot project, is just the begi...

You Can Call it Van Ness or Forest Hills

Image
Whether you call it Van Ness or Forest Hills , the area is a desirable destination in the DC area. Found in the northwest quadrant, the residential neighborhood gains one of its namesakes from its close proximity to the Van Ness campus of UDC and from the nearby Van Ness Metro station . This suburban neighborhood is also home, however, to large sprawling homes and apartment complexes, with some dating back to the early 1920s and others of new construction. While large co-ops, condos and rental buildings stand in the area, so do some newer, luxury apartments. With that comes a range of home prices, with some even topping the multi- million dollar range , displaying architecture of varying styles and decades. You’ll also find several rentals in the area, with prices dependent on the building and location. Recently, community leaders have also focused on the community itself, not only attracting new businesses to the area but keeping the needs of the community in check. Along with t...

Soon in Seattle » The Urbanist

In March of 2016, having recently been let go from the Cleveland Browns due in part to truancy and public drug use, Johnny Manziel applied to live in an apartment. The property manager who processed his application was at first delighted that she would have the opportunity to rent to the Heisman Trophy recipient from Texas A&M. But she was quickly disheartened when she realized that, due to a criminal background screening policy that she had helped create which immediately disqualified applicants who had been arrested for or charged with a crime, she could not rent to Johnny Football. His criminal background check revealed that he had been arrested for domestic violence three months prior. But since she was a fan, and because it was her personal opinion that he was innocent, she successfully lobbied her building’s ownership to restructure their screening policy to disregard arrests, and only screen for convictions (using the logic that arrests are not proof of wrongdoing). ...
