NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Thursday morning in Newport News. Shortly after 2 a.m., dispatchers received a call about gunshots being heard on Giovanni Court in Aqueduct. A few minutes later,  Newport News Communications received a call from a local hospital in reference to a gunshot victim. Police say that a 56-year-old Newport News man was sitting in his vehicle in the Aqueduct Apartment complex when an unknown black male approached . The victim reported that the suspect attempted to rob him and a verbal altercation occurred .  Police say the suspect then pulled out a firearm and shot the victim. The victim was able to drive to a nearby hospital where police were called. The victim was then transferred to another nearby hospital  for treatment of his gunshot wounds to his elbow and buttocks area. A 56-year-old Newport News man is receiving treatment after being shot in the elbow and buttocks area at the Aqueduct Apartment complex in Newport News on Thursday morning , officials said.  The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when gunshots were heard on Giovanni Court inside the apartment complex , according to Newport News Master Police Officer Brandon Maynard .  The victim was approached by the suspect while sitting in his car. The suspect asked the man for what he had and words were exchanged before the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the man, police said. The victim was able to drive to a nearby hospital where police were called shortly before 2:10 a.m. He was later transferred to another hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. The victim's status is unknown at this time, Maynard said. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A Newport News man was arrested for brandishing a gun on Wednesday. Police were dispatched at 9:48 p.m. to the 3800 block of Roanoke Avenue in reference to disorderly conduct.  The reporting person, Ricky Hines, 27, claimed his girlfriend stole money from his pants pocket and was refusing to leave the apartment. According to police, the argument over money was still ongoing and at 10:46 p.m. officers were dispatched to the same residence for an individual with a gun. Authorities were able to separate the parties, and the investigation revealed Ricky Hines was the primary aggressor threatening to kill the victim while pointing a gun.  Hines was taken into custody and transported to Newport News City Jail for brandishing a firearm.  © 2017 WVEC-TV

UPDATE (8:15 a.m.):  Police say Donnell A. Howard turned himself in overnight. He is facing charges including second-degree murder. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is wanted in connection to a deadly shooting last week in Newport News. Officers responded to the shooting in the 7300 block of River Road — behind the  Admiral Pointe Apartments — around 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. Police found a man with a life- threatening gunshot wound to the torso. He was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries overnight. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Eric Blackshear. Police said Wednesday that they’ve taken out warrants on 24-year-old Donnell A. Howard, of Hampton. He’s wanted on charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon. NEWPORT, RI— Police broke up a crowd in a Park Holm parking lot early Monday morning and arrested five suspects. Kyrel L. Perry, 19, of Providence; David P. Herbermann, 26, of South Kingstown; Shaquille Hall, 23, of Providence; and Devante M. Hall, 19, of Newport were charged with Disorderly Conduct. Kendall L. Maloney, 29, of Tiverton, was charged with Violating a no contact order. According to the police report, around 1:40 a.m., officers were called for a crowd of disorderly people at 2 Park Holm. Between 20 and 25 people were in the parking lot. Some were running away as police arrived. Maloney's family was standing by his car and angry because some people had shattered his windshield. Maloney told police he had been arrested Saturday night for violating a no contact order involving his children's mother. He spent the rest of the weekend in prison at the Adult Correctional Institutions , then went to Newport District Court on Monday. He was released. When he went home,...
