Eastwood Elementary opens as Irvine students go back to school

IRVINE — The brand new Eastwood Elementary School opened its doors Thursday, Aug. 24, to welcome 420 students from the still developing Eastwood Village community . “New schools always have a bunch of excited and dedicated teachers , and the facilities here are awesome,” said Jeff Oliva, whose daughter, Beilen, started first grade. “How can you go wrong with Irvine school?” Beilen was among Irvine Unified School District ’s more than 33,000 students who started their new school year Aug . 24. Eastwood is the district’s 23rd elementary school , built to accommodate Irvine ’s growing population. Irvine Unified opened Cypress Village Elementary three years ago, Portola Springs Elementary two year ago and K- 8 Beacon Park School and Portola High School last year. Market shift pitches Dranoff toward condos on South Broad corner

Developer Carl Dranoff is planning 28 stories of luxury condos at Broad and Pine Streets, instead of the hotel-and-apartment hybrid he previously had in mind for the site, as Center City heads toward a likely near-term glut of both rental housing and hotel guest rooms . The developer’s earlier vision of a 22-story building with 76 hotel rooms and 83 apartments known as the Hyde — to have been developed with the Los Angeles hospitality mogul Sam Nazarian ’s SBE Entertainment Group — has been supplanted by a new proposal with 56 “high-end” condos, Dranoff said in an email Tuesday. Dranoff ultimately decided that the location along the strip of Broad Street south of City Hall, known as Avenue of the Arts, “lends itself best to a condo project,” spokeswoman Barbara Gall Sheehan said in a follow-up email. “We think there is strong demand for high-end/luxury condos in premier neighborhoods, like Avenue of the Arts,” she said. Bobby Kirby, a member of the development group that undertook the project, said Pizza Fire has signed a lease for about 3,000 square feet of space in the building. The eatery — with the franchise to be the state’s first — could open “soon,” he said. The lease comes as the owners prepare to close early this week on the sale of first of the building’s 52 condominiums. “We’re excited to have Pizza Fire,” Kirby said. “They are a very cool restaurant concept that will be new to this market. The time is perfect,” he added, noting up to 12 condo closings could be finalized by this week’s end.
