USC Technologies dumps flyash into Northland mine to prevent from collapsing
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - One company accused of polluting a local intersection says it's actually trying to prevent a disaster. USC Technologies is dumping fly ash into an underground mine at Briarcliff Parkway and 169 Highway. Flyash is a replacement for cement. The company says the material needs to be dumped into the mine, in order to stabilize it. "It takes a long time for it to deteriorate, but we're doing it now so we don't have to worry about that happening. There's no immediate risk, but if you left it overtime, it could potentially collapse here", said president of USC Technologies Richie Benninghoven . USC Technologies says the historic mine extends underneath Briarcliff Village and the Briarcliff Apartments . According to state representatives, flyash is not toxic.
