Go West, Young Fam: Renters Are Leaving Austin For Denver And Seattle Because It's Unaffordable.

Image
Nearly two-thirds of Austin renters looking to settle down somewhere else are largely doing so because of affordability, according to a new report from the research firm Apartment List . While the 65 percent of city renters leaving isn't all that different from the national average of 64 percent, the reason they're leaving should be a concern. “You know, long- term Austin renters who have seen prices rise through the roof over the last decade may realize that, if they hope to purchase a home, they might want to relocate somewhere more affordable,” said Sydney Bennet, a research associate with Apartment List .  Affordability topped the list of reasons for 35 percent of renters leaving Austin , according to Apartment List , which compiled national apartment listing search data for the analysis.  While Austin has long had a hot rental market , with an influx of young professionals and a tighter housing supply , more than half of Austin households are renters. But, when renter...

First Apartment Essentials {Plus a First Apartment Checklist}

Last May, my son moved out at the age of 21. He moved in with a friend who already had a house. Logan packed all his stuff in boxes and drove from Ohio to Texas toward his first taste of independence. Because his friend already lived in the house, Logan didn’t need any furniture. A few months later, Logan’s friend got engaged and was set to marry after the first of the year. Now, Logan was on the hunt for an apartment. Aside from the financial aspect of signing a lease and a rental agreement, I was worried that he’d now have to furnish a place of his own. Philadelphia apartment renters most likely to relocate to Allentown, survey says

Philadelphia apartment renters are most likely to relocate to Allentown over other cities in the state, according to a national survey released today by Apartment List . Allentown’s job market and its more affordable housing and quality of life are likely factors, according to the survey. While rent in Philadelphia is more affordable than similar cities across the country, its median rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $1,160, compared to $1,100 in Allentown, according to a separate study by Apartment List , an online apartment rental marketplace . Nationwide, rents have grown by 2.9 percent over the past year. To better understand trends in renter mobility, Apartment List studied data from its annual survey of 24,000 renters to determine where renters are most likely to relocate to outside and within a state. Outside Pennsylvania, Philadelphia apartment renters are most likely to relocate to Washington, D.C., the survey said. “Renters are traditionally more mobile than homeowners,...

Where Do Most Renters Want To Live — And Where Are They Trying To Escape?

Image
Unable to commit. Fear of missing out on something else (#FOMO). Not ready to settle down. No, we're not referring to your ex. Renters also often get a bad rap for being more flighty than their homeowner peers. And it isn't completely unfounded. Nearly two-thirds of renters, about 64%, plan to settle down in a different city, according to an Apartment List report . So where do they want to go? And, perhaps more importantly, where do they want to leave? The rental website surveyed about 24,000 renters, nearly two-thirds of whom were millennials, and then dug into its own internal data for the report. Apartment List looked at 50 large metros across the country for the report. It turns out renters in the priciest metros on the coasts, such as New York and San Francisco, and in inland cities where costs are rising rapidly, like Denver and Austin, TX, are the most eager to move. Folks in colder climes where there aren't as many good- paying job opportunities , like Milwaukee...

David Engberg wheels through the third apartment he’s had in two years. PHOTO BY KARLOS RENE AYALA David Engberg and James Clark cling to their independence by a thread. Both men were born with cerebral palsy and live off Supplemental Security Income , or SSI—a stipend that puts them under the federal poverty line . So far, they’ve managed to keep a roof over their heads by splitting the cost of rent. But since the affordable housing crisis hit , the roommates have been priced out of two apartments in just two years. The stressful shuffling was witnessed by Jennifer Schmidt, their case manager at InAlliance, a nonprofit that provides employment and living services for people with disabilities. Advocates such as Schmidt are becoming increasingly alarmed by the way skyrocketing rents are affecting Sacramento County ’s 14, 000 disabled residents . Several independent surveys suggest Sacramento is experiencing some of the largest rent increases in the nation. Few feel those tectonic ma...

CLOSE Robert St. John has learned a lot in the restaurant business. Such as: Never store butane in an oven. Robert St. John/Special to The Clarion-Ledger Wagyu Beef with long grain rice , cashew, okra, benne seeds at Coquette. (Photo: Special to The Clarion-Ledger) The following is the third in a four-installment summer- column series covering my top 10 dining experiences for breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch in New Orleans. There are a few items to note: This list purely subjective . Everyone has varying tastes and preferences. This is not a ranking of overall quality from a critical/review standpoint. This is my personal list. These are my personal favorites. Everyone has personal connections to restaurants. These happen to be mine. According to the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, there are more than 1,400 restaurants operating in New Orleans today. That’s an impressive number for a city with a population of only 390,000. There are obviously hundreds of restaurants I...
