A Golf Center Grows in Harlem

Image
Not only were many country clubs and municipal courses once segregated, so, too, were the ranks of professional golf . The Professional Golfers Association of America, the precursor of the PGA Tour, maintained a Caucasians-only policy until 1961, forcing pioneering black pros , including Ted Rhodes and Charlie Sifford, to play for years on African-American circuits. Sifford became the first black professional golfer to break the color barrier, but although he went on to win two PGA events, his best years were behind him. It was in light of this history, and the ongoing plight of minority men in America today, that Mr. Evans came up with the idea of a youth golf program with an academic track in Harlem. Early on, Mr. Evans recalled, people asked him why he was focusing exclusively on young, male minorities. “I said, ‘All you have to do is read the newspaper, look at your nightly news.’ It doesn’t take rocket science to see what’s going on in America.” The Bridge students have exami

Months after the Civil War-era cannonballs were discovered at the former arsenal and munitions factory in Lawrenceville, residents are given the green light to move into the 243-unit apartment complex. By Jessica Sinichak August 21, 2017 photos courtesy Arsenal 201   N ow that the Civil War-era cannonballs have been cleared from the premises, the Arsenal 201 apartment complex in Lawrenceville is ready for rentals. The community’s first residents were allowed to move into the former federal arsenal and munitions factory at the corner of 40th and Butler streets earlier this month, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times . Indianapolis- based Milhaus Development is the developer for the project.   In March, construction workers found more than 30 cannonballs filled with black powder on the former 38- acre Allegheny Arsenal — a major supplier of the Union Army during the Civil War — that were considered still dangerous. A resulting site cleanup led to the discovery of 650

City Plan to Build 1K Apts. in LIC Flood Zone 'Irresponsible,' Critics Say - Long Island City - New York

View Full Caption NYCEDC HUNTERS POINT — Critics of the city's plan to build a school, offices and 1,000 apartments on the Long Island City waterfront called it "irresponsible" to develop the site because it's located in a hurricane evacuation zone that's prone to flooding during storms. Advocates said they would rather see the two city-owned parcels — located next to the East River at the end of 44th Drive — converted to public parkland, with plantings, oyster beds and other green infrastructure to help make the area more resistant to floods.  "We think continuing to build in a flood plain is irresponsible," said Diane Hendry, a member of the LIC Coalition, an advocacy group that launched a petition last week opposing the city's plans. "The land is a natural wetlands. It should be preserv

The Real-Life Carrie Bradshaw's Apartment Is Up For Sale | News & Real Life | Real Life

The Real- Life Carrie Bradshaw 's Apartment Is Up For Sale The apartment of real- life Carrie Bradshaw , Candace Bushnall, is up for sale. The writer, who penned the 90s sex columns upon which Sex and the City was based, has put the 'for sale' sign up on her Greenwich Village abode . Just like Sarah Jessica Parker 's famous pad - the one where she pondered life and love, the site of her break-up with Aiden and that Post It incident - it's a co-op. Though that's kind of where the simialrities end, as Candace's home is a pretty plush and very spacious one bed with 1.5 bathrooms and living room with fireplace and high ceilings, listed at a cool $2.65 million (£1.7 million). We imagine it has a pretty impressive shoe closet too, even on a Carrie Bradshaw scale of shopping obsession. Aptly Mr Big himself, Chris Noth, lives in the same building. Whoever takes posession of this place is going to be one happy home owner . We're imagining Candace's packi

Zone change for shopping center off Citation Boulevard gets OK

The Urban County Planning Commission approved a zone change Thursday that some hope will jump- start commercial development along Citation Boulevard in northwest Lexington. The commission voted Thursday to change the zoning for 10 acres at 1201 Greendale Road for a new shopping center that could include restaurants, a convenience store, bank and other retail. The area is surrounded by neighborhoods, including nearby Masterson Station . It is currently vacant land. Dick Murphy, a lawyer who represents Greendale Properties , said the Citation Boulevard area is booming with new homes, but there are few restaurants or shops in the area between Georgetown Road and Leestown Road. Many people must drive to shopping centers that are inside New Circle Road along Leestown to get groceries or buy gas. “We are not served by any commercial development in that area,” Murphy said. Murphy told the commission the zone change was needed so Greendale Properties could market the property for potent
